Fear in the Familiar

Oh God”, I mumbled, mummified with fear from thoughts of what I once thought were mere fallacies. It all took place some years ago, my parents decided to take me and my siblings on a short holiday to the village. On our trip to the village, I was cautioned by my parents not to stray too far from my family, when I asked why, my mom replied “this village is a wicked place, many people here don’t wish us well, especially those witches and wizards”. As I child, I never really believed in the uncanny part of the supernatural, I only believed in God.

When we arrived, we were welcomed by my aunty and her family members with open arms, I finally got to meet my best cousins after three years. We settled down, had lunch, talked and had a memorable time, later that evening our cousins showed me and my siblings around the village, we didn’t stray too far though.

The next day, I convinced my cousin to take me exploring, he refused at first but it only took a little promise of city goods to get him to change his mind. We took permission and left in the morning to the stream, it was elating to see the activities that took place there. After that, we went to their farm, they had one of the biggest farms in the whole village which played a part in attracting a lot of envy and hatred from fellow villagers.

On our way home, I decided to stop by a shop and buy some things, my cousin left his bicycle with me and headed back home. As soon as I mounted the bicycle, the adventurer in me decided home could wait for some time and I went exploring, an action I wouldn’t repeat ever again.

As I was exploring a forest close by, I decided to rest and close my eyes for some and when I opened them, the sky was dark, I had lost track of time it was slightly odd. On my way out, I glanced at something that was trying its best to look human-like, it creeped me out and I hastened my steps, it let out a scream that was so inhuman it sent chills down my spine, my heart raced when it started moving towards me while trying to mimic the motion of walking.

Everything else seemed to lose meaning as I ran, I sped out of its sight and hid in a hollow tree trunk. I murmured, “Oh God, please” while hoping for a chance to escape, after a while, I heard its scream in the distance and decided to make a run for it, I reached the bicycle and paddled as hard as I could, but it wasn’t over. While paddling my bicycle, I felt something, the weight of another person, no one was with me on the bicycle but there was an unfamiliar weight and presence. I paddled with all my might and eventually, it left.

Luckily, I bumped into another cousin on the way and told him what happened, he said I was lucky I made it out, the forest in our local dialect was called “Edem Mme Ndok” forest of the usurper, sacrifices were offered there and, in the past, people who died from strange illnesses were dumped there, only people who dabbled into the supernatural entered there.

My cousin covered up for me and no one knew until I spilled the beans later. That day made me believe that truly, there are things humans aren’t meant to see, I was lucky to escape, but to this day, I still imagine possible unhappy endings.

This is my entry for the #Septemberinleo prompt of the day, day #08
