the art of exhibition in the gunpowder house
i just found this series from last year that i had forgotten all about. the artist was Liv Sandberg, based in Stockholm featuring sculpture and raku ceramics but most of the details of the exhibition have slipped my mind. but nonetheless i think the shots are worth posting. the gallery is a single open hall on the entire second floor of what used to be a storage house for gunpowder at the old naval base in the 1770s to the early1900s. it's a great location for a variety of art styles and the artists who get a chance to exhibit here are thrilled to arrange their work in ways that make it look like the art was designed specifically for this location.
there are 2-3 artists per summer and while in my opinion not every artist accomplishes that, when they do it's rather magical. there are seven window alcoves that are particularly interesting, two with a view to the sea. the windows have original wooden shutters from the 1700s that leak in a little light when closed. some artists choose to open at least the shutters with the seaview while others choose to block the glass windows from the interior to create a dark backdrop. this artist chose to take advantage of the light coming through the cracks in the shutters and the effect is magnificent
one can easily see how well the placement of the various pieces fits the changes in the surroundings
the raku technique is clearly visible
regardless of how much i like the actual pieces it's so nice to see them so well presented. another artist with a totally different style can hope to get as much out of the same window alcove with other approaches
our town is known for the wide variety of art exhibitions in the summer but this hall is my favorite location and i really enjoyed my visit.
What a fantastic exhibition. Ceramics is a beautiful art form, putting your fingers in a piece of clay. Octopuses!
thanks. very expressive and she's a master with the raku technique.
