I have also been in toxic relationships, and you are absolutely right, the illusion that the other person will change is just an illusion. No matter how much effort you put in the other person does not change attitudes. Over time these power relationships are demmolishing for the person who maintains the relationship with the toxic one.

Yes, many times we do not realize that we are in a relationship of that type, or rather we do not want to realize it. I spent a lot of time with the Spanish colonel who was my boss, although I learned a lot from him, he also humiliated me for several years. In those days he was not as wise as he is today.
