The hassle of renting an apartment

(Edited)

Recently, my siblings and I have been discussing the issue of renting an apartment over here in the north. It's just alarming how all of a sudden houses have become expensive in a place where it used to be less expensive.

Before school, I never thought for once that getting an apartment in Kaduna town would be a hassle because I used to think it wasn't over populated/ crowded like Lagos and Abuja cities where even with your own money, you will still be begging for where to rest your head not knowing that Kaduna state has followed suits. So before I got admission, my younger brother was already in school because my parents had never for once bought the idea of staying in a school hostel we tend to look for an apartment close to school or some meters away. After two months of my brother searching, he finally got one which still requires transportation through and fro going to school. Fast forward to the school house hunting which we all consider to be normal, a family friend has been on the long run house hunting even after paying house agents to help with that but to no avail. The ones we have managed to see, agency fees are competing with the house rent itself and worst the houses aren't situated in nice locations. Getting a house in the city has not been so easy that recently someone had to opt for an abandoned apartment to refurbish it because he was tired house hunting too.

When moving into a new home, there are quite a lot of things one should put into due consideration such as the condition of the road, electricity, water supply and condition of the house which is very important. True almost all the roads in our country are bad, but there are still manageable ones because I would not want it to be difficult going home after a stressful day only for me to get to my house with so much struggle jumping here and there for where to put my legs because of the bad road. Secondly, electricity. In a place where there is no power supply, I consider it to be darkness. I don't want to even imagine staying in an area where you don't see light for up to three days and when they finally would bring it, it only lasts for just three hours. Some of my course mates are suffering from this and trust me if there is no light there won't be adequate water supply from the borehole. Also the house conditions. Most people do not do propal inspections about the house they want to leave in and thus you find out one problem and the other after paying a huge amount for rent. These are some of the things I put into considerions before renting my current apartment in school.

Renting an apartment has now become very expensive. Before, we could rent an apartment for fifty thousand, but now, if we don’t have at least three hundred thousand, it’s impossible to get one. The funniest part is that even after paying as much as two hundred thousand for rent, people still end up suffering from lack of electricity, water, and other basic amenities. That’s why, before renting an apartment, we should first check if the area has regular electricity, water supply, and good roads, so that we won’t regret it later.
