The Habit That Won't Stop

For instance, there are people who consider eating all the time as bad, while there are others who take it as something normal.
Some people consider eating animals bad, while others don't see it that way. As individuals, our background, our beliefs, our personal discipline, and culture shape a lot of things in our lives. Although, there are also things that are generally accepted as bad or evil and the Constitution and our religions spell them out vividly.
Sometimes, what we restrict ourselves from might not be generally wrong, but due to one reason or another that is unique to us, those things become an offense.
To many people, those things mean different things. For most, those things are things that serve as a threat to their growth and standards in life.
It is beautiful that we are free beings; we can do or not do certain things, provided they are legal.
But that liberty has become a problem to many; it has made many so loose that they can't control certain things anymore.
Take, for instance, alcohol consumption. The Nigeria Constitution didn't restrict responsible consumption of alcohol, but what are some people doing? They take excess, they befriend it.
Their lives become tied to it, and it gets to a point where they no longer have the willpower to say “no” to it.
Now imagine that the law forbids it, and there is a strict monitoring of the activity, don't you think the act would have drastically reduced?
Liberty is supposed to give us comfort and peace, but sadly, it is giving us room to become something else.
This is why many people have taken it upon themselves to set boundaries and rules around their lives to refrain from certain things.
The truth is, the law might not punish you for the act, but the act itself would punish you subsequently, and unfortunately, the consequences that come from it are usually detrimental.
One thing I have been struggling to stop yet find myself always falling back to is the habit of talking to myself whenever I am walking alone.
It sounds like something normal, but it isn't. This thing started three years back, I don't know how, but somehow, I enjoy talking to myself audibly whenever I am alone.
It feels like I am with someone when I talk, and I respond; there is this joy I derive from the whole thing, and it makes me feel okay.
But that's not normal. I can't count how many times I bumped into people while doing it, and I felt embarrassed. Although none of them ever said anything but, I know deep within, they must be wondering what's wrong with me.
It's not common to see people talk with themselves; the first impression anyone would have is that the person in that condition is suffering mentally or emotionally, and for a young man like me, that's not a good remark.

However, I have been putting in effort to correct it, even though I have not seen any positive result yet, I hope it stops soon.

This is a really thoughtful and insightful post! 👏 How do you manage your habit of talking to yourself, and do you feel it ever helps you in any way?
Well, you asked how I manage this. Most times, I try to stay conscious and avoid being carried away into deep thoughts.. each time I am conscious, I barely talk to myself, LoL but when I am not, I get loosed.
The second method is by listening to music, the music distracts me from thoughts, instead of talking alone and responding, I sing or just listen...
But sometimes, the whole thing doesn't work..
Wow! Nice write-up. Yes you're right, when people see some people talking to themselves they will think that person has mental illness or the person is crazy but some of them is not mental illness or craziness but instead some people are doing it for the betterment of their health that's why they're doing it.
Some people will never think it's normal... I know talking to oneself is not bad but sometimes it affects the mind, it makes one too thoughtful and hmm.. Sha, I hope you understand...
