Is The Government Not Trying At All?: The Good And Bad Side Of The Government

(Edited)

Whenever the government is mentioned, people's mind quickly goes to a system that lies, promises, and fails, cares less about the people and more about those operating it.

It's so disheartening that today, if you go about asking people about their government, most of the things you will hear are terrible things.

There was a time that I thought only the government of my country had shortcomings, but when I had the opportunity to hear from people from other countries through research, I discovered that it's a global issue.

It's painful that a system that is supposed to ensure that we are safe and well taken care of is showing little to no concern about us.

Whenever you ask people about their condition, especially the issue of job provision in a country like Nigeria, for instance, most who are unemployed will tell you that the government is to be held responsible for their condition.

The issue of corruption and other forms of crime has so enveloped the country that it is difficult to tell what is true and what is not.

However, sometimes I feel people talk so much about the bad side of the government and completely forget about the good.

Even though I am not siding with the government, I believe that no matter how terrible the government is, there are a few things they do correctly.

Sometimes, the fault might not even be with the government; it might be the channels that the government is using to reach the people.

I have heard of cases where the government sends aid to the less privileged in the form of food and money, and those who are assigned to ensure that people get these supplies cut some portion out of the supplies for themselves and only give a little to the people.

When it comes to employment, the government has made room to recruit people into different organizations in the government, but certain greedy individuals buy or sell those slots for their own personal gains.

Because one person in the government is evil, it does not mean the system or everything about the government is bad, the way most people have accepted it to be.

Remember, I am not siding with either the government or the masses here. I am much aware of bad governance; I have experienced it before. The point I am trying to make is that we should not always be focused on the bad side.

To help ourselves out, we should do our best to stop relying on the government, but trust in God, and also step out to make things happen for ourselves.

One good thing the government of my country is doing currently that I love is infrastructural development.

A few years back, the roads in my state were very dangerous, and dodging potholes every minute while driving became normal for drivers.

There was a very high rate of fatal accidents that claimed a lot of lives, yet people had to suppress their fears and still travel, being prepared for anything.

Well, the government has stepped into the case, the bad roads were scraped out and properly fixed, this time around, the single lane has been replaced with a double lane. Although accidents still occur, the rate has drastically reduced.

You can drive on the road with one mind now, and arrive at your location within a short period. A journey that used to take one hour might end up taking you just 35 or 40 minutes due to how good the road is.

I traveled sometime last month, and I discovered that this construction project is not just in my state; it's also happening in many states with bad roads.

I really commend the effort of the government on this. If they have been working like this for the past few years, a lot of things would have changed in the country.

But they say, “Everything that has a good side also has a bad side.” One thing I am not happy with about our government is the issue of the ever-increasing insecurity.

Nowadays, people move with fear in their hearts. Kidnappings, killings, robberies, and so on are on the increase.

The government promised to fight it, but the battle seems endless. Look at the case of boko haram, for instance, for how many years now, the government has been fighting boko haram, but it has not come to an end.

Soldiers keep dying, sacrificing their lives, yet the matter doesn't even look like anything is happening. Is the boko haram society more powerful than a whole nation?

Currently, it's the issue of bandits, who kill, kidnap and frustrate people and go scot-free, and we don't see anything happening about it.

I am not saying that the government isn't doing anything, but the people are living in fear; maybe the government should put more effort into ensuring that they tackle this issue of insecurities.

No matter how good a country is, if the people can not live in peace and have that assurance of security, then there is a serious problem.

Yeah, I agree with you, the bitter truth is that the good things the government are known for are always on smaller percentage compare to the bad things, we've been to witness total abandonment, negligence and ignorance because of selfish interest. This government we hear of are just group of some individuals that force themselves to power. Most are corrupt, making the politics a very dirty game. @emreal

Omo, you used the right sentence, "those who forced themselves into power." Those guys are our people in Nigeria

Yeah, exactly
I say it that its the citizens that reflect the people in government.
Sometimes its not the presidency or Federal governments fault that funds aren't allocated to the specific place, its the same people that were tasked with it that steal it.

When you come down to the lower level too, citizens that hold leadership positions still steal and abuse power

You have said it well bro, sometimes, the problem is not even from the top but among the people at the low level. We hope that things get better sha

On the aspect of the road, I agree on giving them their flowers, even though we still have bad ones, but their impact is a step towards the right direction.

On the bad, I'm worried sick about the level of insecurity, banditry and the likes, we need the government to take this with all seriousness and curb all form of terrorism.
