Facing The Music: Do Not Start What You Can't Finish

I was on my way to lectures at the school of languages, one of the farthest faculties in the school, when I saw Unique, a beautiful, slim, dark skinned lady of average height.

The sound of her voice and the beautiful smile on her face captivated me.

My eyes were fixed on her until she passed. “Damn, that lady is beautiful,” I told Zak, my friend.

“She's the fairest of them all, bro, I saw the way you were looking at her. She's okay, bro,” he replied.

Immediately, I got that response from him, something told me, “don't let her go”

So, I stopped, “bro, I want to talk to that lady.”

Ah, ah, Zak exclaimed, “I thought you were only joking about her.”

“No, I wasn't, please hold on, let me talk to her first,” I replied.

I ran back, almost overtaking them, “good afternoon,” I greeted panting.

They turned and looked at me. “Hi,” one of them answered while they continued talking, almost ignoring me.

“Please, can I talk to you?” I asked, pointing to Unique.

She turned and looked at me, her eyes widened, and her lips parted, “me?” She asked, touching her chest.

“Yes, dear, you,” I answered.

She lowered her steps gradually and then finally stopped.

The two other ladies with her walked some distance away, whispering and laughing.

“Hi, sorry for bothering you. My name is Emreal.’

“It's fine, I am Unique, how may I help you?” She asked.

My heart raced, my blood pressure rose, but I managed to put myself together.

“Em, there is nothing much, you and your friends just passed us, and I was captivated by your smiles and your color.”

“Oh, really? Thanks, dear,” she replied, beaming, her eyes facing the ground.

“If you don't mind, I would like us to be friends,” I added after giving her some space to breathe.

“Oh…kay,” she stuttered, “let's see how it goes”.

“Yes,” I shouted.

She looked at me and chuckled, “you are funny.”

“I'll take it as a compliment,” I replied.

She smiled and said, “is that all?”

“Yes,” I nodded. “Can I walk you to your friends?”

“Sure,” she replied.

On our way, I asked, “how can I see you again?”

“Tomorrow by 10 am, I will be at the school of languages, wing B, class 2. You can come around if you wish,” she replied.

“Okay, I'll come around,” I replied.

I returned to my friend looking excited. I apologized for keeping him waiting and told him about our conversation, and he laughed.

The next day, by 10, I was at the school of languages. I was surprised when I saw her at the exact location she told me, sitting alone, probably expecting me, I couldn't tell.

I stepped into the class, and she seemed not to be surprised, but her action towards me was welcoming. So we talked for a very long period of time. And eventually exchange phone numbers.

We started talking often, seeing each other often, and gradually, I became very important to Unique. She barely goes a day without calling or texting me thrice, if not more.

I was with my friend Zak at Hall one, one of the busiest places in the school.

It was a beautiful morning, and students were busy moving in different directions.

Some were seated, interacting under the mango tree, the same spot we were when Unique came around.

I was so happy to see her. The fragrance of her perfume permeated the whole place. Her charming smile arrested my heart; I couldn't help but give all my attention to her.

A few minutes later, one of my female friends, Bel, was passing by, and she saw us.

So she decided to come around to say “Hi,” reaching where we were. She hugged me and held my hands tightly, saying audibly sweet things to me.

I was totally unaware that Unique was hurt, after Bel left, I discovered that her facial looks were altered, her response became cold and boring.

I tried to understand what I did wrong, but she didn't say a word; instead, she bid Zak goodbye and began to walk away.

I followed her, “What's the problem, dear?” I asked, holding her hand.

“Nothing, just go away,” she dragged her hand out of mine and walked away.

When I returned to Zak with a tightened face, he gazed at me shortly, then said, “bro, what is going on between you and Unique?”

“What do you mean?” I asked, sounding barely audible.

“Are you in a relationship?”

“No, not at all. I already told you we are friends, and we have made it clear to each other that we are not going beyond that,” I replied.

Zak shook his head and laughed profusely, “so you mean you didn't notice that this lady is in love with you?”

“Please, it's not possible, moreover, she told me she has a crush on someone," I replied.

"Open your eyes, man,” he answered.

"Guy, I am not ready for any relationship right now. I want to focus on my studies," I responded.

"You want to focus on your studies, but you always call, text, and give excess attention. Almost everyone who knows you and her thinks you guys are in a relationship. What were you expecting?”

Hmm, I sighed. “how does caring about someone now becomes a crime? Well, Actually, I have gone too far, like you said. The truth is, I like her too, but I am not ready yet.

“Bro, you have already started it; now you have to face the music,” Zak replied.

“I don't think so, bro, I am not ready for that right now. I'll just find time and talk to her, I know she will understand.”

“Player, this lady would be disappointed if you broke such news to her. But I'll give you a secret, she was angry with you because of Bel, so first apologize before you do anything else,” Zak added.

“Wow, thanks, man. Let's see how it goes,” I smiled.

After that conversation with Zak, Unique and I met the next day. I apologized for hurting her feelings, and I made her understand that there was nothing between me and Bel.

I made it clear to her that I like her, but wasn't ready for any relationship at the moment, and she was cool with it.

After that, our friendship became even better, we remained friends and never dated till we graduated and parted ways.

Well well well! I was expecting a better ending, you know?😂 The truth is that I wanted you and Unique to date. Don’t blame me. Sometimes, I love happy endings.😂 And, yes, this one also ended happily. I’m glad your bond tightened and you remained friends till you graduated.

Thanks for sharing, Emreal.

Hahaha, you are obviously a lover boy. Not all love stories often end in love.. currently, we barely even talk, I heard she's in plateau state, she doesn't reply to my messages on Facebook.

Yes, I think it's best we let people know where they stand in our lives rather than deceiving them n making them have hope that doesn't exist
