Can What You Know About First Aid Save Life?

I felt challenged when I saw this prompt, for most people, they only know that first aid is the first and prompt treatment given to people before taking them to the hospital.

Ask them to list first aid items, and they will state them out as if they were the ones that invented them, but when they are faced with the practical event, their knowledge will fail them.

It's so pathetic that I fall into that category; ask me questions about first aid, and I'll tell you, but I do not know the practical aspect.

God forbid, but if anything happens to anyone around me, I am afraid the best I can do is shout for help or rush the person to the hospital.

I am not pushing blame to schools, but I will hold them for this one. While in school, we were only taught a few theories about first aid.

In fact, all I can recall is that they taught us the definition and the items found in a first aid box. At least if they had gone further to teach us how to tackle certain accidents, it would have been even better, but everything stopped on the surface.

I won't also forget to lash myself too because, as an individual, knowing how critical first aid knowledge is and how ineluctable accidents are, I am supposed to personally go the extra mile to learn about it, but I didn't, thank God it's too late.

Seriously, we are taking a lot of things for granted. That mentality we have that only medical personnels should know how to save lives is wrong and needs to be corrected.

Everyone is supposed to have a measure of knowledge on how to tackle little accidents to save lives; we must not necessarily be in the health line first.

Accidents can occur anywhere and anytime, sometimes in places where you can't find a medical centre nearby. In such situations, what do you do?

I see this as a call for individuals, parents, and schools to take this as a challenge to learn about first aid properly and also pass down the knowledge to the younger ones.

Most people trivialize first aid because they feel that there are numerous clinics and hospitals around, so no need, but the truth is life can happen, certain things happen like a movie, one would just be surprised how he/she was caught up in a situation that looks like a dead end, and the only help you will see is yourself.

Many people lost their lives in cases like this, injuries that, if attended to early, wouldn't have escalated were left carelessly and became so serious and later resulted in tragedy. As casual as bleeding looks, many people died because there was no one knowledgeable enough to help them stop it.

It is annoying that today, when a road accident occurs, some people only go there to snap pictures and not to check the patients to see if they could give them first aid before any health service arrives.

Some people do not even know that, that is the primary reason why they are privileged to be in the scene, to save lives and not to fold arm and pity the victims.

Today I feel so challenged, because I am also a victim of little and handicapped first aid knowledge. If something happens to anyone around me, what I know can't benefit them in any way, and that's very bad.

You made a solid point. Knowing first aid goes beyond just talking about it, it’s about being able to act when it really matters. Sometimes the little steps we take immediately can be the difference between life and death.

That is exactly my point. It ought to go beyond some little theories to practicals because it may save a life or more some day
