A Near Death Experience Gave Me Food For Thought
People's change, whether for good or for worst is always traceable to an event or an occurrence. In life, sometimes we feel like we own the world, and we are sometimes tempted to brag about life, especially when we start seeing little accomplishment in our lives. However, nature has a way of humbling and bringing us to a narrow path.
Some years ago, I was so full of energy as a young man, I took life on my shoulders, trying everything that came to me, I just wanted to know what every trend looked like, whatever people of my age talk about, I don't hesitate to try it out.
I continued, on that path, trying different lifestyles. I can't really tell how bad I was but I know I was into bad stuff, I had many friends who were willing to keep me on that path, and it grew intense when I got to College.
One of those days, after morning devotion, everyone was rushing to go out to continue with their endeavors as usual, I stood up to leave as usual when I heard, "I want to talk to you," I turned around to see who it was and it was Mom. "What it is Mom? Can't you see that I am running out of time?" I grumbled.
She looked into my eyes and smiled, " it won't take a minute I promise", she whispered. "I know you, Mom, that's what you always say but you may end up taking up to an hour" I replied as I sat on the plastic chair nearby.
That's my boy, the sweet tempting voice, whispered. "I know it's your time, I know you are enjoying your youthful age but please be careful, I am no longer comfortable with the kind of lifestyle you have been into recently. It is not always the beginning of a thing that matters but the end. Don't rush this life, son."
I stayed quiet for some moment and said "Thank you ma," I know I wasted your time, take this money and use your bike to school" She squeezed some cash into my hand. As a student, you know nothing brings joy like money. "You are the best Mom," I put the money in my pocket and went my way.
You may think those words sank into me right? But they didn't. I repented for a while, In fact, I started pretending to be a saint in her presence but anytime she wasn't around, I changed.
One day I was traveling to rewrite my West African Examination Council (WAEC) I didn't make the first one I wrote. On our way we almost had an accident, I mean it was so close. For the very first time in my life, when I got home, I sat down and I was reflecting on my life.
What happened gave me food for thought, I was wondering what would have happened if the accident occurred. If anything had happened where would I find myself? At that point, I broke into tears.
That was how I became a new man, I quit all my old lifestyle subsequently and adjusted for good. People were surprised, I started attending fellowship and stopped moving about with my old friends. My life took another dimension, things changed and honestly, I am happy about it. I am sure it's my mother's prayer that transformed my life.
As a parent, never give up on your kids, no matter how bad they may be, keep encouraging and praying for them, one day, your prayers will be answered.
Near death experiences are always life changing ones. Thankfully, I have never had one. You should be more careful my friend. Great write up ✨
