A Lesson Not From School

I can remember a time in my life when I couldn't read, write or speak good English, I felt so little amongst my peers in my community, I feared to talk, I lacked confidence and boldness because of my limitations. But here I am today, education has turned the story around.

School has contributed immensely in our lives and in our society. Education is like light, it conquers the dark places of ignorance in our lives.

Going to school taught us many things. It gave us knowledge about different things in life, it taught us discipline, it taught us how to live in society, it taught us about different careers and gave us a guide on which one to go for, and so on.

Some of the knowledge we acquired from it is among the things that are keeping us going in life today, nevertheless, it is not only school that gives knowledge.

There are so many things we learn in life by experience, experiences that school despite its greatness and mighty potential in impacting knowledge can never give.

Permit me to say that school gives knowledge but experience gives wisdom.

I can not remember much from what I learned in school, if you ask me right now what is the evidence that I have gone to school, the proof I have is my certificate, the ability to read, write and to speak English.

But ask me what experience has taught me and I have a lot to say. Some of the lessons are what shaped me to who I am.

One lesson I learned that was not from school is that no one is coming to save you in life. The only advantage you have is you, the only connection you have is you.

Sometimes, we feel that a big man or woman from somewhere, our uncles, aunties or our parents will somehow come around and change our story overnight.

How sweet that sounds, sometimes we are even tempted to think that the school we have gone to, the certificate we have acquired will somehow come through for us, so we get comfortable, and we lie to ourselves that all is going to be well but I have been on the street for sometime, and sadly that is not how it works.

There was a period in my life when I felt that my father was my edge in life, I thought everything was going to be soft for me because he was around.

Unfortunately, just when I was supposed to enjoy those privileges, death took him away. It was then my eyes opened.

If you place your life and destiny on expectations from people and on chances, you would eventually receive the shock of your life.

No one will come through for you, people are usually blind to see you when you are not made. If you don't arise and work yourself up to the top, you will remain stagnated and little.

Since I learned that lesson, everything about my life changed. I became so intentional about my growth and my life regardless of what I see like an advantage in my life.

It is part of the reasons why I don't see giving up on life as an option. Whatever I do, I rather do it till it becomes a part of me or I keep trying. If I give up, what options do I have left? Who will come for me?

I take everything that has to do with my livelihood seriously like my life depends on it. I stay steady working and pushing through because experience has taught me that our destinies rests in our hands, we mould it each day by our actions and inactions.

I hoped on my dad to make life better for me but he is no more, I trusted on my certificate but the government refused to come through, I believe this is enough reason to make us change our perception concerning hoping for things to become better or thinking we have some advantages out there instead of going out there and making it happen.
