The Dark Future of Sports Betting

I've always felt the money going into certain sports was a little too much. This is yet another example that justifies that assertion. When you add sports betting - a subsector that has continues to grow at an unholy pace into the mix with millions of dollars often at stake, what you have is a recipe for trouble.

The latest NBA gambling scandal is quite noteworthy for its sophistication. It involves high level indictments, most prominent being Miami Heat Player Terry Rozier. The FBI arrested a total of 31 people based off the scandal and words like 'insider trading' have been used to describe the nature of what actually went on.

According to the indictments, players and coaches leaked non-public information about injuries or when they planned to quit a game. Bettors then placed huge wagers based on that inside info. - Department of Justice

The amount involved in this particular incident is nothing to be sneezed out either, as it is estimated to be around $7 Million. This incident isn't the first of its kind either and seems to repeat with increased frequency and sophistication. There are elements tying the mafia and various organized crime syndicates in what surely must be a profitable venture.

Root Cause

You wonder why someone as high profile as Terry Rozier will involve himself in such a situation. For many insiders that participate in these sports betting scams, it is usually a combined element of greed and easy opportunity.

Then there's also the case of a huge gaps in pay between professionals which often creates financial stress and desperation for lesser paid stakeholders.

Conclusion

I don't see this monster stopping anytime soon. At the very least not until the root causes of the issues are addressed.
