POST NATURAL

I spent the greater part of Saturday morning on call with my elder sister and while we discussed a wide range of issues, but perhaps the most memorable was on a trend I didn’t know existed till recently. Ever heard of Mummy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a personalized combination of cosmetic surgeries, most commonly targeting the breasts and abdomen, to restore a pre-pregnancy appearance.
Now cosmetic surgeries are not particularly new. They have gained a form of acceptance over the years where people openly flaunt their ‘new bodies’ after going under the Knife. There are a few that don’t go so well but generally not enough to discourage the vast majority of those who see it as an option.
I have never really seen the surgical enhancement of attractiveness as an option for me. Now I don’t necessarily have any ill feelings towards those who do take this procedure, however my distaste does become visible when the natural order of things are inverted and those who choose to maintain their natural post-delivery bodies, or ‘get into shape’ naturally are somewhat shamed.
The commercialization of medicine especially cosmetic surgery is something I completely understand. However I do fear that we’re rejecting with more intensity the natural order of things. If anything, I’ve realized that doing so does not necessarily make us happier.
Maybe I’ll be the crazy one in ten years with my opinions, who knows.
I sincerely hope that you won't be the crazy one.
