High off Punishment

There's something sinister about waiting on anothers error just so they can be punished. It is a rather strange culture that I've come to witness in my company that is perhaps the biggest reason why I don't see myself having a long lasting future with them.

At first I thought it was just central control, but I can see that the pervasive culture has eaten deep. Sure, those who commit rather egregious infractions should be rightly reprimanded, but if I had the opportunity to correct or prevent certain actions then punishment should be the last thing on my mind.

Even in our wider society we see this. Way too many people ready to crucify and few willing to correct. Social media has only amplified this, and some people actively celebrate the potential failures of others even before they occur. In no timeframe will this be right, and some of us will simply never accept such a situation.

Power is of course quite intoxicating, and perhaps nothing captures it more than the power to punish. Yet I sincerely believe that true strength lies not in excessive displays of force but in the ability to influence. Before the company culture starts to affect me I'll likely have moved on.
