Be Seen

One of the bigger lessons I learned during my early days of entry into the Corporate World was the art of trumpeting my achievements. I was recently reminded a few days ago on why this is necessary and how perception ruins can ultimately be the greatest impediment or springboard to ones career growth.

There are a number of people who aren't so subtle when it comes to making their achievements known. I ultimately work with a number of them in my Company. While I certainly feel such things should be a lot more refined in our execution, I hold no judgement to those who engage in this particular practice.

My direct supervisor during one of our regional meetings carried an opinion that I am not firm in my dealings as someone in Compliance department. While this is obviously not the case and I did list a couple of my achievements since I made the move to my new Organization in January, She held onto the simple fact that I did not escalate as much issues as my peers who came into the organization around the same time.

It reminded me of a lesson I have vowed never to forget again:

  • Life is competitive
  • I have more to prove as a newbie
  • I need to make my voice heard as loudly as possible

It is an ultimate reality about the attention economy and how even in areas we might not except we are all vying for attention.

I normally let my performance do a lot of the talking, but I am reminded that being perceived a hard worker from the get-go is a much easier opinion to sustain than been perceived a lazy person.
