SKILLS VS. DEGREE/ CERTIFICATE:..What Matters In Today's Era!!!...
Today while at work one of my colleague brought up this very interesting topic of discuss, cause one of us was about to leave for our compulsory National Assignment for all graduate in our country Nigeria, the acronym for it is NYSC which stands for National Youth Service Corps, then another colleague said whats the point with it, cause most graduate after all is done will return to start learning one skills or another, some of them falling back to doing all sort of jobs that do not count in anyway academically, just doing anything to earn.
Now this is quite a very sad reality in my country, right from when i was on the other side trying to gain admission into uni i understood this reality, that's when i also tried learning a skill alongside too, i was able to learn and master a few skills in baking confectionaries, all sort of pastries, cakes and sugar craft works,
I visualise this in my mind, a mental calculation of the number of graduates pumped into the system every year and trying to match this up with the availability of jobs, its like placing this on a scale what you get is around 8:2, per year, lets assume every year 8people graduates looking for jobs and theres only two jobs vacancy available, thats how our system is, so it would be very wrong for any intentional and purposeful person who is very concern about making it out in life to be lacadastical about it.
I still see a lot of graduate roaming the streets looking for white or blue collar jobs, just like it was, the life we envisioned when we were coming up, we had it all planned out, after graduation we get our dream jobs, fix our life, all we ever wanted in place for a blissful life, little did we realise reverse is the case.
I dont really know the relevance of a certificate like the Bs.C Bachelor of science, how relevant it is in other countries but here in Africa its nit regarded, you really have to get more than that say a Ph.D or higher to get a real certified well paying job, to make matters worst, as a fresh graduates seeking for jobs this employers will be look out for 5-10 years of experience which makes it all too difficult ro rely on certificate alone to earn a reputable living.
There are no jobs and yet versities keep sending out millions of graduates into the system, what do you think is the remedy in such a country like ours..definitely it calls for self independence, its exactly were a lot of graduates get it all too wrong, relying on the government to provide jobs, relying on some uncle or aunties in high places to come through for them once they are into tthe system, failling to realise that the system is choked, jamd, over crowded and so the only way out is to nurture and prioritize skills over certificate while in the academic system, cause the possibility of getting that dream job is very slim but when your skills comes handy it places you on demand, you are relevant and sort after cause of the solution you provide, cause of the gap you're able to bridge, cause of the provisions you've made, this is entrepreneurship, thats one way to stay floated and visible in an economy like ours.
CONCLUSION
In today's era were you have tech skills floating over the internet, its all to easy to get acquainted with one, learn, adapt and grow, be it online or offline skillset thats in your portfolio its feels great, apart from placing you on demand, you stay relevant, needed, it creates this multiple source of earning income for you, diversifying your sources allows you the luxury of time, freedom, and fulfillment.
NOT TRUE
If anything, workers in this part of the world (especially B.Sc) go and get lower degrees to get jobs. Why? The excuse is that you are over qualified. Ph.D becomes relevant when you are climbing to higher levels, say you are an entrepreneur or working in a science related field. That is in this part of the world. I have seen happen with people around me. They apply for a job and they are told to present an NCE or HND certificate because they can't afford to pay them. Meanwhile, HND and B.Sc don't have much difference.
First time ever heard of that, i know desperation has cause these certificate holders accept less paying job, not necessarily because of a certificate but just to earn something alongside, yah i made a mistake there, not like its not regarded but to find a befitting job that is equivalent to what they have is very slim, which is why Foreward thinking graduate would know what to do before entering the labour market...
