Every four years in the month of August (starting from the Sydney 2000 Olympics when we became aware of these Games) we would be in front of the television during school holidays, eagerly awaiting what was about to happen; I remember that we used a lined notebook to chronologically record the performance of all the Venezuelan athletes; we suffered, shouted, and passionately cheered for these heroes, it was like a religious act carried out from beginning to end, with infinite optimism.
_
In this way, we gradually achieved a unique connection with sports; we understood that seeing sports as a mere competition is absurd. Sports are also knowledge, a cultural fact; sports dwell in our souls to make us better people. And love for our country is also nurtured, as when my mom told me at the London 2012 Olympics - 'GOLD, GOLD, GOLD, by Rubén Limardo in fencing' - or watching the gladiator of our women’s boxing, Karla Maglioco (the same one who challenged the scary tunnel) compete, or seeing Julio Luna cry with deep emotion being so close to the bronze medal in weightlifting; and we will never forget that image of Adriana Carmona in Athens 2004 when she won the bronze medal in Taekwondo and hugged her Korean coach, full of absolute euphoria.

And the games are brilliant anecdotes, Usain Bolt's records (he always reminds us more of the historical Maradona and Muhammad Ali), delving into history and coming across great feats like when Jesse Owens defeated the Nazis in Berlin in 1936, Hitler did not have the courage to award him the gold medal, or Abebe Bikila's victory in the Olympic marathon in Rome 1960, the same one who ran the 42 km barefoot, achieving glory without shoes.
Who could forget the story of Derek Anthony Redmond in Barcelona '92, when during the 400 meters race he collapsed on the track onto his left knee, his right hand on his thigh and his head down. His eyes filled with tears. Around him, the race continued, but all eyes were on him. A medical team with a stretcher ran to him to assist, but he refused to get on that stretcher and, in pain, crying and desperate, began to move forward painfully, barely putting weight on his right leg. His father Jim jumped from his seat in the stadium stands and ran down, fighting through the crowd, bumping into people, and finally managing to reach the track. Security measures tried to stop him, but at that moment nothing and no one could stop him. He accompanied his son to finish the race, and the two crossed the finish line together. Humanity witnessed one of the most emotional moments in the history of sports.
Antiquity also surrounds the Olympics, a kind of pleasant mysticism. How many superstitions do the athletes have during the Games? One of the most cherished amulets for athletes are the rings that symbolize the five continents participating in the Games, and many of them get tattoos of these rings somewhere on their bodies. Others keep every object obtained from the host countries in their homes. We would like to know how many things Fabiola Ramos (the Table Tennis judge), who attended five Olympics, collects.
The Modern OlympicsOlympic
Competition has been known since ancient times, with the first reports dating back to 776 BC, in the city of Olympia in Greece. The modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896, at the suggestion and under the coordination of the Baron de Coubertin. Since then, they have been held every four years, with a few exceptions (World War I and II). The modern Olympics have generated a global movement based on sport and fair competition, framed by countless anecdotal events that make the history of world Olympism interesting.
