Relationship in the society is a matter of Communication, trust and mutual respect and for a relationship to thrive there is need for effective communication. Effective communication is a foundation and cornerstone for a healthy, fulfilling and successful relationship. It should be noted that for mutual trust and understanding to be established in any given relationship, for instance, marriage, friendships, family, workplace relationship etc effective communication must be built intentionally from all parties involved. Communication is like a bridge that binds or connect two people together, allowing them to access each other thoughts, emotions, feelings and desires. It should therefore be expressed in a clear, emphatic and respectful manner. However, when communication breaks down partners feel unheard, unloved, relationship suffers, unresolved conflicts piled up and the end will be disastrous.

Can effective Communication be achieved?

It can really be achieved if both parties are intentional about it, and by concentrating on these key elements and tips.

Active Listening; A good communicator is a good listener, do not listen to judge, argue or to throw shades. There is a need to an undivided attention to your friends, partner, family members or co_workers.

Clear expressions; Even though some school of thoughts believed that actions speak louder than voice, however voice, I mean verbal means of communication is still the best means of communication. By this I mean for effective communication to take place,it is better to communicate thoughts, feelings, ideas and needs in a clear and respectful manner.

Take breaks; When conversation is becoming tensed, heated and sour, it is advisable to take a break for it to be revisited in order not to say something or act in a way that will later brings regrets. Issues like that can be revisited when both parties are calm.

Don't play blame games; At all costs instead of blaming a partner, take responsibility for you actions. Avoid been defensive or dismissive. Instead focus on achieving understanding and effective communication.

Practice Forgiveness An healthy relationship is a work of two forgivers. Communicators should avoid or let go of resentment, grudges and bitterness for healing to take over.

Having said these, what are the common communication pitfalls one should avoid?

Criticism.
Defensiveness.
Stonewalling.
Assumption.
PassiveAggresiveness.

By cultivating and incorporating effective communication skills and strategies, couples family members, workers, employees and employers, neighbors and relatives can nurture good relationship, navigate life challenges, build trust strengthen bonds and sustain a beautiful environment.

I remember having seen, I don't know how many times, during my education, the rules of the good speaker and the good listener and it is essential to listen carefully to be able to respond as one should and if couple communication is one of the most difficult things, but not impossible if both do their part.
