Anxiety is a common mental problems or conditions that is characterized by worry, constant fears and nervousness. When all the aforementioned characters are persistent and overwhelmed, then anxiety has taken place, and if not properly managed, depression will be on the way. It should be noted that anxiety is a normal emotional activity that can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, social status or even race, but once it's an habit . Having understand what anxiety is, we can proceed to anxiety in Teenagers. Teenagers are often faced with life challenges and temptations at their age, and because society doesn't understand them,this emotional break down are always persistent in them. What are the signs of anxiety in teenagers?

  • Excessive worry or fear.
  • Restlessness and mood swings.
  • Loss of interest in school works or activities.
  • Low self-esteem.
  • Social withdrawal or isolation.

Having looked at the signs, it's compulsory to check for likely factors that are responsible for it.

Various factors are responsible for this cankerworm, and a closer look at it will help adults to helps out Teenagers from it. Some of it are,

Peer Pressure; It should be noted that peer pressure is one of the factors that affects teenagers either negatively or positively. The actual feelings of wanting to conform or feeting into a particular ways of life of there age range or peer groups often leads into anxiety.

Academic Work; It is also another push that caused anxiety in teenagers. This is born from high expectations from schools, teachers, parents or even themselves to perform well. Stress related to standardized test, exams and evaluation are often caused anxiety.

Emotional related factors; e.g family issues like conflict in the family, divorce issues on the case of parents, child abuse, negative self image or self doubt,trauma, body changes in puberty. All these can make a Teenager to be anxious and probably falls into depression.

Environmental factors; This can be related to scary news like earthquake,flood, other natural disasters. Teenagers experiencing this will likely be anxious.

How can Teenagers overcome Anxiety?

Although, overcoming anxiety can be an herculean task, but with effective strategies it can be manage and reduce.

Teenagers should learn to talk to trusted adults like Parents, teachers, friends and therapist. Information and advise from these set of people will help them reduce anxiety.

Also, limiting screen interaction and social media will also go in long way, as one will not have access to scary news, and mind will be settled.

Lastly, Teenagers should engage in self care activities like being kind to oneself, self compassion, going to their age appropriate relaxation centre, take a deep breath, saying no when necessary.

Remember, overcome Anxiety will take time and patience, but it can be achieved.

Anxiety is not a good thing as it takes the confidence in teenagers away, but with the right approach to dealing with it especially going to adults for counsel and being assured they can turn to them for help is a sure way to overcome such disorder.
