The necessary discomfort / La necesaria incomodidad (eng-esp)
Hi, girls.
I know I've talked about similar topics many times, but no matter how often it's said, I still see it every day in my work as a concert guitar teacher and at the art school where I work.
There, I see so many students with great musical talent, but who struggle to learn and perform their program perfectly.
In those cases, the problem isn't talent, as I've told them, but overconfidence, complacency. They get too comfortable with their talent, thinking that's what will save them, but it won't. In art, that's worthless.

It's not enough to pass the exam with the minimum grade when you could have achieved the maximum. In art, what matters is dedication, study, discipline, sacrifice, and constant self-improvement.
I've seen dreams die because of comfort. Those dreams didn't die in the classroom during an exam; they died in the comfort of an armchair, playing video games or watching movies, instead of studying.

The main problem with comfort is that it becomes routine without you even realizing it.
At first, it's just one day you skip studying, then two. The routine becomes an excuse: "I'm not inspired today," "I'll do better tomorrow." And finally, that excuse becomes part of your identity: "That's just how I am, talented but relaxed."
You define yourself by your potential, not by your work. And when you realize that the world is moving on and your talent has stagnated, it may be too late.
Others, with less natural talent but more discipline, have already surpassed you.

Comfort is very comforting, seductive. It calms you and convinces you that everything is fine, that there's plenty of time, that tomorrow will be a better time to do what you should be doing today.
It's a pleasant lie. That way, dreams aren't killed by a resounding failure; they die slowly, without drama, in the passing of those easy and peaceful days. They fade away on the sofa.

True creation, genuine self-improvement, requires the discomfort of hard work. It requires the friction with technical difficulties, with the passage you can't quite grasp, with the humility to know you don't yet know everything.
It requires getting up when you don't feel like it, repeating when you're bored, and seeking a teacher who demands more from you than you demand of yourself. No one becomes strong in a soft environment; knives aren't sharpened on silk. No one improves by systematically avoiding what's difficult.

That's why so many people reach adulthood with untapped potential, but unrealized. With lives that feel empty.
They didn't fail due to inability, but because they repeatedly preferred the comfort of the familiar to the productive discomfort of the unknown and demanding effort.
Talent is the starting point, not the goal. And the path between the two is paved with the constant rejection of comfort.

Hola, chicas.
