A few months ago, a student asked me why I insisted so much that she study an old piece by a 19th-century guitarist as an exercise. She told me, with the sincerity of youth, that she had found a faster way to do it on YouTube, that it worked for her and sounded good.

I gave her the same answer my teacher gave me twenty-five years ago, which at the time seemed like a cliché: "Look, it's best to drink directly from the source"; and I insisted she study the piece I had chosen.

Today I fully understand what it means. I have dedicated my life to the guitar. I've given concerts all over the world and spent countless hours in rehearsal rooms, alone with my instrument. And throughout all this time, I've proven time and again that there are no shortcuts when it comes to truly learning. I'm not just talking about learning a piece, memorizing the notes and movements. I'm talking about understanding it, feeling why the composer placed that finger there, or why they chose that nuance.

At the beginning of my career, I was also somewhat arrogant, like almost every young person (I suppose that's normal). I believed that with talent and a few hours of practice I could achieve anything.

But I was lucky enough to encounter teachers who wouldn't let me skip steps. Older people, with wrinkled hands and infinite patience, who had dedicated their lives to unraveling the secrets of music. They are not called Masters for nothing.

They didn't just correct my hand position; they explained why that position allowed classical guitarists to achieve such a beautiful sound texture. They told me how they had dealt with stage fright, how they had overcome an injury, what repertoire worked in certain venues.

That's drinking from the source.

It's going to them, to those who have already walked the path, and asking questions. It's not about blindly imitating them, but about absorbing their experience. Why repeat their mistakes? Why spend six months looking for a fingering that solves a passage, if they already discovered the most effective and least damaging way to do it forty years ago? They give us the result of years of trial and error. They shorten the path for us in a way that no online tutorial can match.

And that learning isn't limited to the guitar, of course. I saw it in my own father, who was a carpenter. I watched him choose the wood, how he respected the grain. It wasn't just a matter of technique; it was accumulated wisdom. He didn't learn that from a manual; his master taught him in the workshop. The same is true for a doctor, a bricklayer, a cook. They all rely on a tradition, a chain of knowledge passed down to them.

That's why I believe the smartest thing we can do is be humble. To recognize that no matter how much we know, there's always someone who knows more, or at least, who knows something different. Listening to them doesn't make us less; it enriches us. It allows us to build our own path on solid foundations, not on sand.

When my student asked me that, I didn't press her with the theory. I took out my guitar and played her a passage from a piece by Tárrega.

Then I took out her phone and we played a version of the same passage, performed by a guitarist she mentioned, but whom she had learned by ear. I asked her, "Do you hear the difference? The first one has soul, it has the story. The second one sounds good, but it's just sound: there's no music." I don't know if she fully understood then. But I do know that everything I am as a guitarist I owe to those people who generously allowed me to drink directly from their source.

And that is a privilege and a responsibility that now falls to me to continue.

Hace unos meses, una alumna me preguntó por qué insistía tanto en que estudiara como ejercicio, una obra antigua, de un guitarrista del siglo XIX. Me dijo, con la sinceridad de la juventud, que ella había encontrado una forma más rápida de hacerlo en YouTube, que le funcionaba y le sonaba bien.
Le contesté lo mismo que me dijo mi maestro a mí hace veinticinco años, y que en ese momento me pareció una frase hecha: "Mira, mejor bebe directamente de la fuente"; y le insistí en el estudio indicado.

Hoy entiendo perfectamente lo que significa. He dedicado mi vida a la guitarra. He dado conciertos por todo el mundo y he pasado incontables horas en salas de ensayo, solo con mi instrumento. Y en todo este tiempo, he comprobado una y otra vez que no hay atajo que valga cuando se trata de aprender de verdad. No me refiero solo a aprender una pieza, a memorizar las notas y los movimientos. Me refiero a comprenderla, a sentir por qué el compositor puso ese dedo ahí, o por qué eligió ese matiz.

Al principio de mi carrera, yo también era algo arrogante, como casi todo joven (supongo que es normal). Creía que con talento y algunas horas de estudio podía llegar a todo.
Pero tuve la suerte de toparme con maestros que no me dejaban saltarme pasos. Gente mayor, con las manos arrugadas y una paciencia infinita, que habían dedicado su vida a desentrañar los secretos de la música.
No por gusto llevan el título de Maestros.
Ellos no solo me corregían la posición de la mano; me explicaban por qué esa posición era la que permitía a los guitarristas clásicos conseguir esa textura de sonido tan hermosa. Me contaban cómo habían lidiado con el miedo escénico, cómo habían superado una lesión, qué repertorio funcionaba en según qué salas.
Eso es beber de la fuente.
Es acudir a ellos, a los que ya han recorrido el camino, y preguntar. No se trata de imitarles ciegamente, sino de absorber su experiencia. ¿Para qué repetir sus errores? ¿Para qué pasarme seis meses buscando una digitación que resuelva un pasaje, si él ya descubrió hace cuarenta años la forma más eficaz y menos lesiva de hacerlo? Ellos nos regalan el resultado de años de prueba y error. Nos acortan el camino de una manera que ningún tutorial en internet puede igualar.

Y ese aprendizaje no se limita a la guitarra, claro. Lo he visto en mi propio padre, que era carpintero. Yo le observaba cómo elegía la madera, cómo respetaba la veta. No era solo cuestión de técnica, era sabiduría acumulada.
Él no aprendió eso en un manual, se lo enseñó su maestro en el taller. Lo mismo pasa con un médico, con un albañil, con un cocinero. Todos ellos se apoyan en una tradición, en una cadena de conocimiento que alguien les transmitió.

Por eso creo que lo más inteligente que podemos hacer es ser humildes. Reconocer que por mucho que sepamos, siempre hay alguien que sabe más, o al menos, que sabe algo diferente. Escucharles no nos hace menos, nos hace más ricos. Nos permite construir nuestro propio camino sobre unos cimientos sólidos, no sobre arena.

Cuando mi alumna me preguntó aquello, no le insistí con la teoría. Saqué mi guitarra y toqué para ella un pasaje de una pieza de Tárrega.
Luego saqué su teléfono y pusimos la versión del mismo pasaje, tocado por un guitarrista que ella decía, pero que había aprendido de oídas. Le pregunté: "¿Escuchas la diferencia?
La primera tiene alma, tiene la historia. La segunda suena bien, pero es solo sonido: no hay música". No sé si lo entendió del todo entonces. Pero yo sí sé que todo lo que soy como guitarrista se lo debo a esa gente que, con generosidad, me permitió beber directo de su fuente.
Y ese es un privilegio y una responsabilidad que ahora me toca continuar.
