Creativenonfiction149: Wedding Poridge.
Good day everyone, welcome to my blog.
My joy knew no bounds when Saheedat informed me about Auntie Baraka's wedding. She told me about the wedding date immediately after the introduction was done in March.
Aunt Bee, as we fondly call her, is a sister-in-law like a sister to my friend Saheedat, she has shown love and kindness to Saheedat and her children without measurement. She has taken part and present in every milestone attained by Saheedat' s children. She has always been there for them come rain come sunshine.
About a month to the wedding, Saheedat brought the uniform material that the family chose for the occasion. I bought some including the head gear(gele) and sewed a beautiful trousers and top with it in preparation for the party.
In anticipation for the big day Saheedat was afraid that the food they had arranged with the caterer may not be enough to serve all the invited guest so she called me few day to the wedding saying babes, I fear that the family food may not go round for all the guests at the party, what do you think we can cook as a side dish?.
Seeing that yam is in season,I answered her saying let's just cook yam porridge as a side dish. Luckily she agreed and said oh that is a good idea, please make a list of the things that will be needed in preparation of the yam porridge.
Within a few minutes I had finished making the list but I left the quality to her to decide. She never mentioned anything about the yam porridge again so I thought she was already sure that the family food will be enough to cater for all invited guests at the party.
I was at home reading on Thursday afternoon when she called, she called when the wedding was just in three days time that we should meet at the local market so we could buy all the necessary items for the yam porridge. That was how I became an emergency chef.We bought cooking items like yam, sweet potatoes, crayfish, palm oil and other things.
Apart from buying the cooking items, we also bought dozens of dust pans which we intend to use as survivers for our guest.By the time we left the market, I was already exhausted but I am happy to walk in the market as this is a holiday period and I hardly get to go out.
The cooking was done at my place so I prepared my pepper and other things by Friday evening. I was up as early as five on Saturday morning when another friend who we had planned to cook the porridge with got to my house.
We started the preparation. After peeling, we realized that we had to cook twice because it was too much. By eight in the morning the porridge was ready , I took my bath and moved down to the venue of the wedding with the food, my gift and souvenir
We got there in time before the program started and I quickly went to greet the bride. She was so happy to see me and said, "Auntie, I hope you are going to allow your friend to come visit me at my husband's house often." I told her that why won't she? you are a rear sister in-law you know before she was engaged in conversation by her husband's people.
I later went to Saheedat's house to carry the other coolers of food in order to set our serving table. Our guests were served different kinds of foods like jollof rice, fried rice, semovita, Amala and asaro(yam porridge) with a lot to eat and drink.
When the party was about to come to an end, we shared the dust pans we bought to all our guests and they really appreciated it. We started parking up around six in the evening and finished about one hour later. I was so busy that I took only one picture but I am happy that I was able to deliver and satisfy all the invited guest who were present for my friend's sister's big day
The bride was about to leave before I went to present my gift to her. I bought her a set of baby baths. While presenting it I said to her Aunt Bee, your journey as a wife will come with ease, joy and happiness. She said a thunderous amen and gave me a big hug saying thank you for all that you do ma.
Thanks for taking your time to read through, Yours truly @elizy, a teacher, mother and passionate writer.
Images are all mine.
Perhaps you meant souvenirs, instead of survivors? Have a look at it and we are sure you will agree.
Nice wedding :)
