Walking Down the Canal Towpath: A Cold Morning Adventure

avatar

This morning, despite the chilly weather, we decided to take a short stroll down our local canal towpath. You literally had to keep moving as it was so cold. The flat surface of the towpath provides an easy route for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. However, the cyclists don't always alert you that any second, they will be flying past you. They think one little ring on their bell is enough. By the time my brain has worked out what the sound is, they've gone past taking one of my limbs with them. Probably, a slight exaggeration there, but you get the gist.

It was so cold even the bench was iced over. No sitting on there today. I think my bum would have gotten stuck, and I would have remained there until I'd thawed out. Another slight exaggeration ....

It was very bleak looking, and most of the canal had iced over. Some of the ducks had managed to find a bit of the canal that was still ok to swim in.

There was a little bit of bird activity with the magpie high up in the tree and the blackbird eating the berries.

On our way back, of course, once the water has frozen, you get village idiots throwing litter into the canal. The water will defrost, and the litter sinks to the bottom, polluting the water. If only I'd had a net ....

Wow! The weather has turned very cold again! Nice walk along the canal. Those birds don’t seem to be bothered by cold weather and freezing water!

It’s been a very cold week indeed but was a bit milder in Berkshire today until the sun set, noticeably later, didn’t get dark until 5pm. Yay the days are getting longer!

Don’t sit on frozen benches. I noticed the station benches whilst waiting my train yesterday were solid with ice. Brrrrrrrrr.

I like all the seasons but it definitely wasn't a day to be out for long. It's even worse when you are trying to take photos. Your fingers practically drop off!

A week ago my hands got so cold, I lost all feeling in one of my hands, I literally had to massage it back to life almost. Slight exaggeration 😉 but only just
