Walking Around Clumber Park: An Encounter with an Abandoned Deer and Unexpected Kindness

While the sunny weather continues, we paid a visit to Clumber Park, which is a large area of parkland, heath, and woods and owned and maintained by the National Trust.

The ground covers around 3,800 acres and includes a large lake and a gothic church.

During our walk, a passerby told us that a fawn had been abandoned by its mother and had been adopted by a herd of longhorn cows.

One of the cows had let it suckle milk so it thrived and has now grown up thinking it’s a cow! The woman hadn’t seen it but we found it sleeping among a herd of longhorns. Mother nature at its best.

We spotted a couple of great crested grebes on the lake. At the beginning of the year, they pair up. The breeding season runs from January to August, during which they will engage in elaborate courtship. These were just facing each other!

This ford is on the River Poulter, which flows through Clumber Park. The ford is quite shallow but the longest in the county. Wherever there is water, there's ducks ...

Little robin redbreast ...

Can you spot the squirrel?

We found a small crocheted gift, a 'positivi-pea' that is left anonymously for people to find. These gifts are meant to put a smile on the finder's face. They are called Random Acts of Crochet Kindness. We accepted the gift and took it home with us.

That dry tree in the middle of the water and that "church building" from a distance seem mysterious to me.
