A Walk to See the 3,700 Years Old Standing Stone

Earlier this year, archaeologists realised that a standing stone in one of our forests is actually part of a stone circle from the Bronze Age, and is 3,700 years old. The team also recorded that five nearby stones would probably have been standing at some point, creating a stone circle. I've not seen the stone for a couple of years, so it's good to revisit it, knowing it's actually part of a stone circle. It was quite dry this morning so off I went. I parked up at the lovely mossy stone wall.

There was a long footpath at the beginning. There was the odd dog walker about but I was mostly on my own on the footpath.

I spotted this tree with holes in its bark. I wasn't sure whether it was caused by a woodpecker or a beetle of some sort.

Unfortunately, when I got to this part, it was completely flooded. I needed my wellingtons to get through it.

Luckily, I found another pathway in the wooded area. It was still
wet, but doable. Another obstacle was the fallen tree I had to go around.

I finally reached the standing stone. The last time I was here my friend's dog peed up it! No respect.

I'm glad the scientists have finally found out what it is. I never really believed it was just some random standing stone.

I started my way back but I did do a slight detour to explore another footpath. It didn't really go anywhere, though, apart from back to the road.

I do like these random stone walls in the middle of the wood. They must have some story to tell.

I returned to the main footpath and back to my car. It was good to have dry feet for a change.

Can't beat a standing stone! We love them so much we put our own standing stones up in our garden as a nod to 'home'.
