Hello dear community.

This week our new judge, @alessandrawhite, poses two questions:

1️⃣ When have you had to learn a new skill under intense pressure?

This first question brings to mind the test I had to pass to find out if the job I chose was the one I was truly called to do.

It was a relatively short period. I studied dentistry for nine and a half years and practiced the profession almost continuously for twelve. I realized that the professors were right when they said that you learn more in practice than in the classroom. Imagine learning to do with people what you practically only saw in books. I think that's truly learning under pressure.

2️⃣ When have you completely misjudged someone upon first meeting them and then discovered they were much better or much worse than you originally thought?

Years ago, when I was very young, new neighbors moved into the houses they built on a lot across the street from ours.

The woman from one of those families came to check on things the first time, and I noticed she didn't turn around to say hello or even make any kind of polite gesture. I thought she was unfriendly and pretentious.

Over the years, I realized that nothing could be further from the truth.

She was a mother of two pre-teen children, a pharmacy graduate, and the owner of a well-known pharmacy in town.

It turns out that she once gave me an injection and helped me get my first job when I was close to graduating. She was also there when I was about to give birth to my first son and came to my daughter's second birthday celebration, as well as many Christmases and New Year's celebrations.

Of all the neighbors who have moved away, she and her daughter were the only ones who came to visit us afterward.

I also remember her call to offer her condolences for Dad's passing. She could barely speak because her voice broke with emotion.
She has passed away. Now I'm remembering her, and it saddens me that we drifted apart before, even though she didn't live that far away. We had different political opinions, but she never lost the warmth typical of the people from her native Zulia.

1️⃣¿Cuándo has tenido que aprender una nueva habilidad bajo intensa presión?

Con esta primera pregunta viene a mi mente la prueba que tuve que superar para saber si el que elegí es el trabajo para el que tenía vocación.

Fue un periodo relativamente corto. Estudié odontología 9 años y medio y ejercí la profesión de manera casi ininterrumpida 12 años. Me di cuenta de que tenían razón los profesores al decir que en la práctica se aprendía más que en las clases. Imagínense aprender a hacer con personas lo que prácticamente sólo viste en libros. Creo que eso es verdaderamente aprender bajo pesión.

2️⃣ ¿Cuándo juzgaste completamente mal a alguien al conocerlo por primera vez y luego descubriste que era mucho mejor o mucho peor de lo que pensabas originalmente?

Hace años, estando yo muy jóven, llegaron nuevos vecinos a vivir en las casas que construyeron en un terreno que había al frente de la nuestra.

La señora de una de esas familias vino la primera vez a supervisar y noté que no volteaba hacia nosotros a saludar o a hacer siquiera algun ademán de cortesía. Yo pensé que era antipática y pretenciosa.

Con los años me di cuenta que no había nada más lejos de la realidad.

Era madre de dos hijos preadolescentes, graduada de farmaceuta y dueña de una farmacia conocida en el pueblo.

Resulta que ella alguna vez me inyectó y me ayudó a conseguir mi primer trabajo cuando estaba cerca de graduarme. También nos acompañó cuando iba a dar a luz a mi primer hijo varón y vino a la celebración del segundo cumpleaños de mi hija, así como a muchas navidades y celebraciones de año nuevo.
De todos los vecinos que se han ido a vivir a otras partes ella y su hija fueron las únicas que nos vinieron a visitar después.
También recuerdo su llamada al darnos el pésame por la partida de papá. Casi no pudo hablarme porque su voz se quebró de la emoción.
Ella falleció. Ahora la estoy recordando y me entristece que antes nos hayamos distanciado, a pesar de que no vivía tan lejos. Teníamos opiniones políticas diferentes pero no dejó de tener con nosotros la calidez típica de la gente de su tierra zuliana.
