Something strange is happening to our cashew tree. The bark is peeling off one of its largest and lowest branches.

About three months ago, I noticed a white mushroom growing from a seam along the divide. It didn't seem to have any special characteristics.

I took a picture of it, but as the days went by, I almost forgot about it.

Today I was watering the plants and a fruit fell from the tree. I rushed to pick it up and in my haste I hit my head on that same branch. That's how I remembered the mushroom and saw that it was still there, the same size, solitary, but yellowish in color.

I photographed it again and learned from the identification app that it closely resembles the species called Cryptoporus bolvatus, a polypore fungus that attacks the rotting sapwood of conifers. "Sapwood" is the white layer beneath the bark of trees.

Since this is a cashew tree, I think it is probably a tropical variety of the same fungus.

Al tratarse este de un árbol de merey pienso que probablemente sea una variedad tropical del mismo hongo.

It is also called "Veiled Polypore" or "Cryptic Globular Fungus" and affects the bark as a consequence of an attack by a beetle.
