Another Type of Crab

avatar

Well If you think of a tasty crab that is going to fill your hungry belly, then I am so sorry that this post title and the content will disappoint you because the type of crab that I have today is a little bit peculiar, and not something that you can see on the seafood restaurant. :)

What have now is a cab spider, and although I already made a post about a yellow crab spider that I already used as my entry for the photofeed macro contest, and you can see in this post. Yesterday was the yellow one, and now we have the green one, but they are almost completely different body shapes although they share the same crab in their name.

The one that I have today is the Oxytate virens (Thorell, 1891), from the bright green color od its body. Look how beautiful it is on the upper side of this leaf. It looks so nicely camouflaged on this leaf.

Even when it moved to the underside of the leaf which has a white color, but still it seems to blend so nicely with the leaf, a perfect running away scheme.

This little guy is one of the member of the Thomisidae family or the crab spider family because of its appearance, and they can be distinguished by the longer and larger front legs. something that they need as the ambush type of predator so that it can reach longer for the prey.

Seeing something like this for the first time. 🧐
Even though this crab is small but it will be no less than a nightmare for its prey.

Very interesting looking spider. I have never seen one like it before. Those front legs I am sure make it a very fearsome predator for any small insect.
