Black Oil Pastel: A Deeper Look at Portrait Sketching

Sketching portraits is something I always do, and drawing is a practice that hasn't left me with the passing years. What has changed, though, are the materials I use for it. In these specific sketches, I used a black oil pastel, and I really like how this color behaves.

Hacer bocetos de retratos es algo que siempre hago y dibujar es una práctica que no me ha dejado con el pasar de los años. Lo que sí ha cambiado son los materiales que uso para ello. En estos bocetos específicamente usé un óleo pastel negro y la verdad es que me gusta mucho cómo se comporta este color.

There are several things I really like about this material because it achieves a thickness in black that I find quite different from what it would be with a pencil or a normal crayon, especially because the tone of black it achieves is quite opaque.

Hay varias cosas que me gustan mucho de este material debido a que logra un espesor en el negro que me parece bastante diferente de lo que sería con un lápiz o un crayón normal, sobre todo porque el tono de negro que logra es bastante opaco.

The oil pastel also has a sensation when marking with it that's difficult to emulate with anything else. It's a type of color that adheres in a way that's quite satisfying for me, and the truth is, I love it. I hope you like them.

El óleo pastel, aparte, también tiene una sensación al marcar con él que es difícil de emular con cualquier otra cosa. Es un tipo de color que se adhiere de una forma bastante satisfactoria para mí y la verdad es que me encanta. Espero les gusten.
