Vitamin B12 Deficiency in vegans

Vitamin B12 is only found in foods of animal origin, e.g. meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, etc. So, strict vegetarians (unless they are consuming B12-fortified items) are at higher risk of having vitamin B12 deficiency.

The primary use of Vitamin B12 in the body is for RBC (red blood cell) development and maintenance of the nervous system.

The deficiencies of vitamin B12 are manifested as macrocytic anemia (where the RBC becomes larger than the normal one), sore tongue and mouth, and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as mood disturbances.
