I already wrote something about Pilsen a few days ago. We went to the train station, then briefly to the brewery, and took the streetcar around with the day ticket.

Something you can always do, however, is to take a closer look at the local church.
Pilsen has St. Bartholomew's Cathedral and has been a diocese since 1993.

Construction of the cathedral began after the city was founded in 1295. At 103 meters, the church tower was once one of the tallest church towers in Europe and is still the tallest in the Czech Republic.

Reason enough for us to climb up there.

But first you have to cross the church square. There are really many beautiful old buildings around it, most of which have been renovated.

But one building in particular caught our eye.
It is the town hall of Pilsen. Even if it doesn't have a really inviting entrance, it is one of the most magnificent buildings I have seen in Pilsen. This building would look good in any city.

This corner house has also been really well renovated and houses a cheese store.

Our destination was, of course, the church tower. It's funny how some church tower entrances look. This one can only be seen through a tiny inconspicuous door next to the main entrance.
At first we thought, wow, they don't even charge money to visit.

But no, once you've climbed the first two or three floors, you come across this poster.

Well, if you'd known it was below, you probably wouldn't have climbed up. But if you've already climbed up a bit, you don't want to go back down without a sense of achievement.
The price was very reasonable at just over 3 euros and we paid it.

As with every church tower, the second floors are wide but steep.

Since everything there is made of wood, a sprinkler system was installed that can probably flood the entire tower. You are more likely to drown here before the fire kills you.

At some point, the stairs here also become narrower and steeper.

In Bruges we had the problem that the bells started ringing when we were right in the bell compartment.
When we saw this bell, we quickly moved on. I don't even want to imagine the noise level when it rings.

The last steps were really steep again.

But the view was beautiful again. From this church tower at a height of 100 meters, you could see the whole city.

Once we were back down again, we went straight into the cathedral itself.

I've seen so many churches and cathedrals. They are all big and magnificent.
This one is too, but it doesn't really have a unique selling point.

Here was a small side room with an altar. Nothing special really, if there hadn't been an iron chest at the side.

It was kind of spooky. About 150 cm long and opened through a slit at the top.
It could well have been a sarcophagus. I assume it used to be one.

You couldn't see inside because it was too dark for that.

My fingers reached in anyway and I was prepared for Dracula to grab my hand.

My cell phone has an incredibly good night vision function. I took a photo inside.
There was nothing in it. Unfortunately. No skeletons or any undead.
Ok, undead aren't allowed in churches anyway.

At the exit there was the classic nativity scene for Christmas.

Ich habe ja schon etwas über Pilsen vor ein paar Tagen geschrieben. Wir waren am Bahnhof, dann kurz in der Brauerei, und sind mit der Straßenbahn mit dem Tagesticket etwas umher gegondelt.

Etwas was man aber immer machen kann, ist die örtliche Kirche unter die Lupe zu nehmen.
Pilsen hat die Bartholomäus Kathedrale und ist seit 1993 ein Bistum.

Nach der Stadtgründung 1295 wurde mit dem Bau der Kathedrale begonnen. Einst gehörte der Kirchturm mit 103 Metern zu den höchsten Kirchtürmen Europas und ist immer noch der höchste Tschechiens.

Grund genug für uns, da mal hochzusteigen.

Zunächst aber muss man über den Kirchenplatz. Aussenrum stehen wirklich viele alten schöne Gebäude, die auch größtenteils renoviert sind.

Ein Haus aber, ist uns besonders aufgefallen.
Es ist das Rathaus von Pilsen. Auch wenn es keinen wirklich einladenden Eingang vorweisen kann, ist es eines der prachtvollsten Häuser, die ich in Pilsen gesehen habe. Dieses Haus würde jeder Stadt gut stehen.

Auch dieses Eckhaus ist richtig gut hergerichtet und beherbergt einen Käseladen.

Unser Ziel war aber natürlich der Kirchturm. Es ist schon lustig, wie manche Eingänge von Kirchtürmen aussehen. Dieser hier ist nur durch eine winzige unscheinbare Türe neben dem Haupteingang zu sehen.
Zuerst dachten wir, wow, die verlangen noch nicht mal Geld fürs besichtigen.

Aber nein, wenn man die ersten zwei oder drei Stockwerke nach oben gestiegen ist, kommt einem dieses Poster eintgegen.

Naja, wenn man das untern gewusst hätte, wäre man wohl nicht raufgestiegen. Aber wenn man schon etwas nach oben gelaufen ist, will man auch nicht mehr ohne Erfolgserlebnis runter.
Der Preis war mit etwas über 3 Euro aber sehr günstig und wir haben ihn dann gezahlt.

Wie bei jedem Kirchturm sind die ersten Stockwerke breit aber steil.

Da dort auch alles aus Holz ist, wurde eine Sprinkleranlage eingebaut, die wohl den ganzen Turm fluten kann. Wahrscheinlich ertrinkt man hier eher, bevor man durch das Feuer umkommt.

Irgendwann werden die Treppen auch hier immer schmaler und steiler.

In Brügge hatten wir das Problem, dass die Glocken angefangen haben zu läuten, als wir genau im Glockenabteil waren.
Als wir diese Glocke gesehen haben, sind wir schnell weiter. Ich möchte mir gar nicht ausmahlen, wie hoch der Lärmpegel ist, wenn sie läutet.

Die letzten Stufen waren wieder richtig steil.

Dafür war der Ausblick wieder wunderschön. Von diesem Kirchturm auf 100 Meter Höhe, konnte man die ganze Stadt überblicken.

Als wir wieder unten waren, ging es dann sofort in die Kathedrale selbst.

Ich habe schon so viele Kirchen und Kathedralen gesehen. Alle sind sie groß und prunkvoll.
Diese hier ebenfalls, aber ein wirkliches Alleinstellungsmerkmal hat sie nicht.

Hier war ein kleiner Seitenraum mit einem Altar. Eigentlich nichts besonderes, wenn da nicht eine eiserne Truhe an der Seite gestanden hätte.

Die war irgendwie Spuki. Ca. 150 cm lang und durch einen Schlitz oben geöffnet.
Es hätte durchaus ein Sarkophag sein können. Ich nehme an, es war auch mal einer.

Man konnte nicht hineinschauen, da es dafür zu dunkel war.

Meine Finger haben trotzdem reingefasst und ich war darauf vorbereitet, dass Dracula meine Hand packen würde.

Mein Handy hat eine unglaublich gute Nachtsicht Funktion. Ich habe mal reinfotografiert.
Es war nichts drin. Leider. Keine Skelette oder irgend ein Untoter.
Ok, Untote haben in Kirchen ja sowieso keinen Zutritt.

Am Ausgang gab es noch die klassische Krippe zu Weihnachten.
