One advantage of city breaks is that if it rains, you always have an alternative to walking around the city. You can visit the local museums.

When we were in Strasbourg, the weather was rather mixed and we bought a 20 euro ticket for several museums. This allowed us to visit the museums in the city for three days.
We then always chose the rainy periods for these activities.
One museum house is the Palais Rohan in the middle of the centre right in front of Strasbourg Cathedral.
Rohan reminds me somehow of Lord of the Rings.

The Palais is one of the most important buildings in the city of Strasbourg.
It was built from 1731 to 1742 by order of a Cardinal Armand-Gaston Maximilien de Rohan-Soubise.
Louis XV and Marie-Antoinette were among the guests there a short time later and even Napoleon Bonaparte stayed here for a while in the years 1805 to 1809.

For a short time between 1872 and 1898, the university was housed here.

During the Second World War, the house was damaged by British and American bombers and it was not until 1990 that the renovation of the rooms was completed.

However, when we visited the museums, we saw that there are numerous markings on the cracks in the walls that record the movement of the masonry.
I am not a professional, but you can clearly see that the cracks are getting bigger. It can only be a matter of time before the building has to be completely renovated.

Today there are three museums in the palace. The Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Museum of Fine Art. Well, fine art is a matter of taste. You'll see.

We started on the top floor, in the Museum of Fine Arts.

There, it's mainly about paintings.

You can see that there were no weekend painters working there. They were good at something.

Painting so many people is an art in itself. And in this case, almost all of them turned out well.

I don't know why everything always looks so gloomy in many of the old paintings. But that's often the case with portraits.

Why church paintings are often like this is already clear to me. The church has always played on people's fear. This fear was shared everywhere to convince even the last one that evil is omnipresent.

Would saints today walk around with a sword and boast that they have defeated evil with a skull under their foot?
Probably not.

Of course, John the Baptist is also there.

I kind of have a soft spot for dark art.

The museum is on the top floor of the building and it took us about 45 minutes to look at everything. I'm sure there are many more paintings, but again that would probably be a bit much for a blog on Hive.
But if you are an art lover, you should take a look. You got a small overview here.

Ein Vorteil von Städtereisen ist, dass man bei Regen auch immer eine alternative zum Stadtbummel hat. Man kann die lokalen Museen anschauen.

Als wir in Strasbourg waren, war das Wetter eher durchwachsen, und wir haben uns ein 20 Euro Ticket für mehrere Museen gekauft. Damit konnte man drei Tage in der Stadt die Museen anschauen.
Wir haben dann immer die Regenperioden für diese Aktivitäten ausgesucht.
Ein Museumshaus ist das Palais Rohan mitten im Zentrum direkt vor dem Strasbourger Münster.
Rohan erinnert mich irgendwie an Herr der Ringe.

Das Palais ist eines der bedeutendsten Bauwerke der Stadt Straßburg.
Es wurde 1731 bis 1742 gebaut im Auftrag eines Kardinals Armand-Gaston Maximilien de Rohan-Soubise.
Ludwig XV und Marie-Antoinette waren dort kurze Zeit später einer der Gäste und sogar Napoleon Bonaparte wohnte eine Zeitlange in den Jahren 1805 bis 1809 hier.

Für kurze Zeit zwischen 1872 und 1898 war hier die Universität untergebracht.

Im zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Haus durch britische und amerikanische Bombern beschädigt und erst 1990 war die Renovierung der Räume abgeschlossen.

Wir haben allerdings beim Besuch der Museen gesehen, das Zahlreiche Markierungen an den Rissen der Wände angebracht sind, die die Bewegung des Mauerwerks aufzeichnen.
Ich bin kein Profi, aber man kann gut sehen, dass die Risse größer werden. Es kann nur eine Frage der Zeit sein, dass das Gebäude wohl wieder Grundsaniert werden muss.

Heute sind drei Museen in dem Palais. Das Archäologische Museum, das Kunstgewerbe Museum und das Museum der schönen Kunst. Na ja, schöne Kunst ist mal Geschmacksache. Ihr werdet sehen.

Wir haben im obersten Stock angefangen, im Museum der schönen Kunst.

Dort geht es hauptsächlich um Gemälde.

Wobei man schon merkt, dass dort keine Wochenendmaler tätig waren. Die konnten schon was.

So viele Menschen zu malen ist schon ne Kunst für sich. Und in diesem Fall, sind so gut wie alle auch noch gut gelungen.

Warum auf vielen der alten Gemälden immer alles so düster aussieht, weiß ich nicht. Ist aber bei Portraits oft so.

Warum kirchliche Gemälde oft so sind, ist mir schon klar. Die Kirche hat immer mit der Angst der Menschen gespielt. Diese Angst wurde überall geteilt, um auch den letzten zu überzeugen, dass das Böse allgegenwärtig ist.

Würden heute Heilige mit einem Schwert durch die Gegend laufen und sich damit rühmen, dass sie unter ihrem Fuß das besiegte Böse mit einem Totenkopf haben?
Eher nicht.

Natürlich ist Johannes der Täufer auch mit dabei.

Ich habe ja irgendwie ein Faible für düstere Kunst.

Das Museum liegt im obersten Stockwerk des Gebäudes und wir haben ca. 45 Minuten gebraucht, um alles anzuschauen. Es sind sicher noch viel mehr Gemälde vorhanden, aber das wäre wohl wieder ein bisschen viel für einen Blog auf Hive.
