The Art of Adaptation

Surviving is winning - This is one thing I've learned through life. Charles Darwin's theory may have focused on aquatic habitat to explain how the best survive the harsh reality of their birth, but indirectly it touches every aspect of life. Adaptation has been man's way of surviving, starting from the era of our ancestors till date, surviving the turns of events, the impact of seasons, change in environment, and the various vicissitudes that surface in man's toil. This constant strive for adaptation and survival becomes the reason behind why change is constant, because evolution is inevitable in our daily dealings and environment.

Most Africans in their quest for daily bread exposes themselves to harmful environments. It often looks impossible to survive at the beginning, but in a few weeks they adapt to such an environment and develop other factors that guarantee a high level of their survival. I came across some northerners in Abuja who were dump packers, they cook, sleep, and eat there in the refuse dump and I wonder how they remain healthy without getting sick. I believe it wasn't like that when they started, they only developed a mechanism that enabled their adaptation and their immune system became stronger to combat it. A regular person may grow sick or worse contact a deadly disease if he tries to sleep in a dump site for a night.

The same goes with expectations, sometimes (usually most times) expectations fail. We have our hopes high then suddenly it is dashed to the ground. At this point disappointment and depression comes in and we wonder how to live another hour knowing all hope is lost. The art of adaptation says "expect anything at any time". One doesn't need to be comfortable at one point forgetting that disappointment may set in. What we don't have at hand, shouldn't be counted as if there is , because the next minute is not guaranteed. While we live life, we should embrace change.
