No additional costs
A magical sentence that so easily misleads us every time we plan our trips, and at the same time we choose accommodation based on half-board or all-inclusive offers.
We pay a lot more for a hotel than an AirBNB apartment, in order to avoid lunch and dinner options at expensive restaurants, and we think that we have solved everything with that?
OK, maybe we are, but only in terms of food.
Small pleasures like a cold frappe on the beach (or some beer), ice cream or cakes when we walk after a whole day of enjoying the beach is something we impose on ourselves, but here I don't mean those expenses, but the unplanned ones, which I thought I wouldn't have.
The first thing that awaited me was a surprise related to the parking lot.
The hotel has a parking lot, but does not guarantee that there is enough space for all guests.
When I arrived in front of the hotel, I realized that there was not enough space and that the car would be parked in one of several nearby private parking lots. for 5 days, €75. It's not catastrophic and it's good that there are enough parking spaces, but I didn't foresee that expense.
And the second expense that I will have to make, not that I didn't foresee it, but it really annoyed me.
When I was planning the trip, I decided not to buy any data plan for my mobile number, because when I'm not in the hotel, that is, when I'm walking or enjoying the beach, I wanted to be disconnected and devote myself to reading, swimming, napping under the umbrella. I only needed data transfer in the hotel room when I was on WiFi, but the unpleasant surprise regarding the internet, which, according to the information from the hotel's website, is available throughout the hotel (unlocked network), is that the internet is so loaded and slow that it is almost impossible to use it.
It can't be used to call Viber or Whatsapp, I can't open websites, trying to match even one photo on Hive ended ingloriously...
So, let me summarize. WiFi works, but there is no internet!
and this led to another unplanned expense.
Luckily, the data plans that I buy through the Ubigi platform are not too expensive and $10 will get the job done for me (10GB is quite enough), but buying that plan, which will allow access to the Internet even when I'm on the beach, further complicates the concept of "No Internet on the beach, enjoy and read!"
I will have to somehow force myself not to actually pick up the phone and to use the purchased internet only in the hotel room, when I had planned to do so.
The only thing I thought was that I wouldn't have additional costs for the internet, but one thing is plans, and the other is what awaits us on our travels 🙂
All that remains is to add up all those unplanned expenses until the end of the trip and not think about them now, because that's the only way I can really rest.
I use Revolut for purchasing data eSim cards when travelling outside the EU, it's easy and cost-efficient.
Do you use Revoult to pay for eSim that you buy locally or do you have an app like Ubigi or Airalo?
For you, for EU countries, no problem, you don't have roaming.
Wherever I go, if it's not the Balkan, I have to take care of it.
In Bulgaria, data transfer would cost me 0.5€/100KB... Or 5€/1MB... That's 5000€ for 1GB.
Mistakes are not forgiven... And that's why I must to have an eSIM data plan 🙂
Revolut offers these as in app purchases:
