Monyo, Szeged, the only pub open for the holidays, just in time for #BeerSaturday week 408
When I planned a short holiday in Hungary for the Easter holidays, I knew that most shops would be closed for those few days, but I didn't expect that the pubs would also be closed...
I planned to go to Malata's favorite pub with a beautiful garden and a great selection of beers.
But after arriving in front of the pub, I was met with information about a non-working day.
Maybe that's a good thing, because I was in a car, so I probably would have had very little beer.
As I walked through the streets of Szeged to the parked car, I saw a familiar name.
Monyo, a bar with the same name as the beer brand that I presented in the last few posts.
Without thinking, I stepped into the bar that was open and to my surprise, it was confirmed that it is a Pub that pours and sells beer of that very brand.
An animated octopus from the pub floor greeted me before the waiter.
On the beautifully decorated bar, I saw the signature Monyo cans with interesting can designs.
There is also a shelf with a lot of cans that were probably in their offer before because there are a lot of cans that are not in the offer now.
When I approached the bar and looked at what beers they had on tap, I knew I had to be careful, because I had a car ride back to the hotel waiting for me, so there were only two beers to consider.
But...
The beers they had on tap, which I hadn't already tried from the cans I bought and already tasted, had quite a high alcohol %, so I had to be careful.
If I choose two glasses, I will have to choose weaker beers or take 0.4l and 0.2l of beer with a higher % alcohol for tasting.
I asked the waiter to pour me a glass of 0.4l
Dead Rabbit beer.
I wasn't sure if I was drinking Cyber rabbit or Flying rabbit, so I chose this.
Very strong, with 8.3% Alcohol, Double IPA beer.
Beautiful color and high foam, is the characteristic of DIPA beer.
Let's see what the brewer has to say about this beer, while I enjoy the pleasant bitterness and beautiful aromas and flavors of tropical fruits that dominate this beer:
"West Coast-style double IPA dry-hopped with Citra, Centennial and Amarillo. With Dead Rabbit, we aimed for a "simple" beer where everything is about juicy, citrusy American hops; nothing less, nothing more. So we've chosen our favorite ones (Citra, Centennial, Amarillo and Warrior) and amped up the hop bill until we couldn't add more. The result bursts with flavors of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, papaya) and pine-y bitterness, built upon a sweet and biscuit-y malt base. Ideal breakfast for all the hopheads out there."
I agree with them. Aromas and tropical flavors surpass the smell of alcohol, and pleasant bitterness is balanced by malt.
But I felt that the beer had a higher alcohol % and I was not allowed to take another strong one.
That's why I opted for the strongest one they have on tap, but only 0.2l.
Redcurrant x Lime Imperial Sour Ale 10%
I did not have the opportunity to see that beer in their offer and I believe that it is a limited series.
It wasn't until I looked up what the manufacturer had to say about this beer that I realized why I hadn't seen it before, it just came out on offer:
"Our latest MOJO WORKIN' release has arrived! This limited-edition Redcurrant x Lime Imperial Sour Ale means business – with a 10% ABV and an intense fruit explosion, it's guaranteed to shake up your taste buds.
Packed with loads of redcurrants, it delivers a bold, tart freshness, elevated by the bright citrus kick of lime. Expect vibrant acidity, a smooth body, and a daring character – every sip is a burst of fruity delight."
Like any Sour beer, acidity is present but balanced by malt, and alcohol is not felt during tasting.
This is a beer that will knock you off your feet later, when you move away from the table you are sitting at, because each sip wakes you up with its freshness.
The foam on this beer is not high, the color is darker yellow and the smell and taste are dominated by lime.
In addition to the beer itself, I also liked the ambiance in this place, on the walls there are cartoon characters from their designed labels, old radios, Marshall amplifiers and chairs like in cinemas. And I especially liked how they made the toilet walls recognizable for the Monyo brand.
Unfortunately, because I had to drive, I wasn't allowed to go near the taps anymore, and I will be tagging this pub in my #worldmappin , and will definitely visit it again.
Lucky to be able to find a working pub on this non-working holiday Saturday for #beersaturday.
Until next time, when the Malata pub opens its doors, from Szeged, I greet you, beer lovers.

We could have met for a drink in Budapest :)
There's another microbrewery I visited in Budapest, stay tuned for the next week (or perhaps the other one, I'm on the meetup in Graz, and will likely lack time to publish a #beersaturday post).
I will announce each of my trips where there are Hivers.
You never know where and with whom you may meet 🙂
I do so on Snaps and Waves ;)
Wow! The Monyo Bar is cozy and comfortable. There are lots of canned beers, and it is amazing. you got a lot of choices. And their beer glass is unique. It looks so classy.
Although I already had one glass with the gift set. now i bought another one 🙂
Hahahah yeah because its truly pretty.
What a great twist of a beer! Even though your original plan did not work out, you ended up finding a gem. The way you explain the beers makes me feel thirsty. The Dead Rabbit sounds like a bold choice, and that Imperial Sour has me seriously curious. The decor of the pub is so cute, like cartoons.
I imagine how these animated characters look to someone who overdoes these strong beers. I can bet that some drunk guest will stop to talk to them 🙂
Haha, correct! After a few glasses of those strong beers, they might be looking very real. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone tries to high-five one of them.😆
