Remember MINI in World Rally Championship?
Hello rally fans :)!
The Mini brand has a legendary history in rallying,
most notably with the iconic Mini Cooper S securing victory at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964. This success cemented Mini’s place as a true motorsport icon.
Personally, Mini’s are my favorite cars and owning one would be a dream come true :). I love the John Cooper Works or the original 3 door mini cooper :). They’re literally go-karts for the road use😆. Combine WRC with that and it’s a combo like no other 😍.

In 2011, Mini made an exciting return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) with the Mini John Cooper Works WRC, a car developed in partnership with Prodrive. The team launched with high hopes, aiming to compete in six WRC rounds that year, and fans eagerly anticipated the return of the legendary brand to the world stage.
Mini’s participation in the WRC saw some impressive results. Dani Sordo, one of the standout drivers, managed to secure a second place finish at the 2012 Monte Carlo Rally, proving the potential of the car and team. These moments showed that the Mini could still compete with the big names of the sport.
However, Mini’s WRC program faced challenges from the start. In 2012, BMW, Mini’s parent company, reduced their support for the Prodrive team. This led to the creation of the WRC Team Mini Portugal, managed by Motorsport Italia, which took over as the factory supported. Unfortunately, this transition marked the beginning of the end for Mini’s ambitions in the WRC (to which I still cry to because I didn’t get to witness it😢).
Later that year, Mini announced it would withdraw from the WRC program. By the end of the 2012 season, the team closed the door. The reasons behind Mini’s withdrawal were a combination of financial constraints, the high costs of maintaining a competitive rally program, and strategic decisions within BMW to redirect resources to other projects.
Although Mini’s wonderful journey in the WRC was short, the impact was undeniable. The Mini John Cooper Works WRC demonstrated flashes of brilliance, while the classic Mini’s historic rally triumphs continue to inspire motorsport fans. For fans of the brand, the dream of seeing Mini compete at the highest level of rallying will always hold a special place in their hearts.

And here’s me looking at a MINI when I was just near purchasing it :)
Nice car but something was wrong in collaboration of Prodrive and BMW and program just stopped. Motorsport Italia continued to run it for private drivers until end of that season just because of obligation to promoter.
It’s so sad though.. some say they also withdrew because all factory Mini’s are front wheel but that seems like the last reason to give up..
That's impossible. Mini WRC was four wheel drive machinery. Homologation from that time says that cars must be 4WD with 1.6t engines.
