Is Trump Making A Mistake?
I was fresh out of university, a brand-new doctor — minted hot off the press. Green as they come, but brimming with optimism and hope for the future. It was late 2019, and I was ready to take on the world.
Then came the news of a new virus. At first, it was just background noise. I mean, we’d seen and heard about various outbreaks in the past, right? No big deal, I thought. But little did we know this particular virus was about to turn our lives upside down and change the way we did things forever.
By the time the calendar flipped to 2020, it was crystal clear: this virus was spreading… like wildfire. Panic set in. Governments worldwide scrambled to impose lockdowns, and I was thrown into the deep end as an intern. It wasn’t exactly the smooth start I’d imagined for my medical career.
Soon enough, I was part of the frontline workforce caring for COVID-19 patients. Every cough, every sneeze around me was like a ticking time bomb. Could it be COVID? The fear was palpable. I was terrified of catching the virus myself. Colleagues were falling sick one by one, and I couldn’t shake the thought: it’s only a matter of time before it gets me too.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that some parts of the world didn’t even have lockdowns. And the shock didn’t stop there. Remember how masks were supposed to protect us? I knew someone who wore two masks everywhere — and still caught the virus within two weeks. It was a wild, confusing time.
Then came the vaccines. Hailed as our ticket out of the pandemic, they were supposed to protect us or, at the very least, reduce the severity of the disease. But then we heard about people who’d had two shots and a booster still falling seriously ill. And reports began trickling in of people developing heart issues or blood clots post-vaccination. It made you wonder: did global health organizations like the WHO make mistakes? Was there political meddling? Who stood to benefit?
Over the past few years, we’ve seen our fair share of questionable decisions in healthcare, alongside some impressive strides. Which brings us to an intriguing question: was Donald Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the World Health Organization (WHO) a “dumb” decision? Or did he have a point?
Will the Second Time Be the Charm?
In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Trump sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General announcing his intention to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO. The withdrawal was set to take effect in 2021. But before that could happen, President Biden took office and reversed the decision on his very first day.
Now, Trump’s back with a second attempt. His reasoning? He claims the WHO mishandled the pandemic, especially its origins in Wuhan, China, and failed in responding to other global health crises. Trump also thinks the U.S. pays too much money to the organization. Over the past decade, the U.S. has contributed around $100 million annually, more than any other country. By contrast, China—with four times the population—contributes far less. Trump calls it unfair and disproportionate.
What Are the Risks?
Pulling out of the WHO would undoubtedly have consequences, but predicting exactly what those consequences might be is tricky. Public health experts warn that this move could have ripple effects on healthcare in the U.S. and globally. The WHO has been critical in addressing urgent public health crises, like eradicating smallpox and nearly wiping out polio through vaccination campaigns.
Could the U.S. stepping back weaken the organization’s ability to tackle future pandemics? Would it leave the global health community in disarray? Only time would tell.
A Little History
This wouldn’t be the first time a country withdrew from the WHO. Back in 1949, the Soviet Union and several Eastern European states pulled out during the Cold War, only to rejoin in 1956. Today, Liechtenstein is the only UN member state that isn’t part of the WHO.
What Do You Think?
So, here’s the big question: do you think withdrawing from the WHO is a bold move or a blunder? Would it lead to better accountability and reform? Or would it weaken global health efforts at a time when we need them most?
It doesn´t need to have bad consequences for the US. They could voluntarily adopt any measures issued from WHO if reasonable, similar with Switzerland which is not part of the EU but still adopts some of its policies.
But on the other hand, the missing financial contribution from US hopefully will trigger some changes and reforms within the WHO which are very needed!
I agree with you that the WHO needs a lot of reforms and the defective financial aid from the US might be just that incentive that it needs.
There might be little or no consequence for the us as a result of this action however, if the US maintains immigration from other countries there might be the added scare of importing illnesses from other countries that did not have enough funding so tackle them.
But only time will tell.
Bro, I am non medicine guy but it frustrated the hell out of me to watch people spreading fake news and calling the pandemic a hoax or a conspiracy. I cannot imagine your pain when dealing with such an individual. I know people who actively refused the Vaccine and fought with the workers who were putting themselves in harm's way to defend and protect these dumb guys.
As for the US pulling out of WHO. Things are going to get wild from here. For better or for worse, we will have to wait and see.
People who refused the vaccine had legitimate reasons for doing so.
Vaccines typically take years to test but the covid vaccine seem to have been rushed and pushed into the market without the average time it takes to develop and test vaccines in general... So people who refused it had every right to.
For example, the malaria vaccine has been in testing for a very long time and only recently was introduced into the market.
But by refusing aren't inadvertently putting themselves and the people around them at risk? I understand that the vaccine was rushed but the situation was demanding. Wondering what else could have been done in that situation?
PS: I am just a guy who is interested in learning how things work. And has zero political interest. Nowadays I have to put this disclaimer. LOL!!!
I think you should think about it this way. if the vaccine was rushed it therefore means that it might be fundamentally unsafe and have a lot of side effects as it was not properly tested.
In addition to that the vaccines were not as effective as they were marketed to be, a lot of people still fell ill with COVID after the vaccine, some more than once.
People who had even booster shots of the vaccine still fell ill with COVID thereby rendering the purpose or utility of the vaccine moot.
People who stuck to eating healthy sleeping well and exercising had better chances of staying away from COVID than people who took the vaccine and thought that they were safe without taking proper measures.
Given the fact that the vaccine was new, we don't have much of a body of data to study. It therefore means that most of what we are doing with the vaccine is based on anecdotal experiences and new studies that are just coming out.
But it was a conspiracy! The virus came from a lab in China, and it was by far not as deadly as it was sold to the sheeple, in order to roll out the mass vaccinations. There is plenty of evidence for fraud in the clinical data to support the licensure. Believe me, I work in clinical development.
Sorry I should have clarified. I am talking about the absurd claim that the govt wants to put the tracker on people through vaccines and they created a hoax stating there is a virus.
While the scenario you mentioned is completely plausible.
Yes, some of these absurd claims are for sure mingled on purpose across the net, to discredit the true theories. Many of those, like the lab theory, have turned out correct. Or that the manufacturers of those experimental gene therapies made themselves exempt from any liabilities as per the contracts, that were hidden at that time. Later they were then revealed.
This is interesting, can you please share me the links for further study on this. I know corporations are evil but they always surprises me with so little regards for the general public.
