Film Review: After Image (2001)
Certain professions can be quite challenging for people’s mental well-being and even the hardest professional might, after some time, be tempted to quit. This is what happens to the protagonist of After Image, 2001 crime drama directed by Robert Manganelli. The protagonist is Joe (played by John Mellencamp), police forensic photographer who has seen too many murder victims and now seriously contemplates to end his career. Unfortunately, he is about to see few more even when he visits his ailing Aunt Cora (played by Louise Fletcher). Her neighbour is Laura (played by Terrylene), deaf and mute woman who apparently has psychic abilities and has lately experienced visions of murders committed by serial killer. Two of them decide to combine their talents and try searching for the killer (played by Michael Zelnicker) who is obsessed by recording his crimes on video.
Made with low budget and in independent production, After Image represented interesting attempt to deal with the subject of serial killers in the original way – as an art film. Manganelli, who also co-wrote the film with Tony Schillaci, had found the inspiration for his work in 1979 case of a 12-year old girl who became mute after accidentally seeing a murder victim. After Images looks like a very personal project, with Manganelli combining styles and mixing fantasies and visions of the characters with rather realistic setting of Rochester, New York. While he succeeded in delivering serial killer film that looks original, Manganelli failed in everything else. The script is underwhelming with poorly written characters. Rock musician John Mellencamp looks rather disinterested for his role. Her partner Terrylene, who is deaf in real life, looks more enthusiastic about her performance, although some in the audience are more likely to remember few nude scenes. Often confusing, After Images is a watchable film, but can be recommended only to those viewers who don’t have anything better to spend hour and half on.

Lol
I may not be able to see this movie because I have something reasonable that I want to spend my time on
Interesting story for this movie. I think that I am the target as you say at the end of your publication, because although I always prefer a movie that I like all or almost all of it, I have learned to value the stories above what the director finally delivers, so I think I can put up with the negatives you mentioned.
@drax thanks for the recommendation and for the warning too
