The South Korea Global Summit: Fighting Fake News and AI Disinformation

Hey guys, I just read about and watched this huge summit in South Korea and it got me thinking.

The president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, has talked about something really important; fake news that is spreading faster because of advanced technology such as AI.

Now, I am not an expert but there is a reason why this is big. Imagine trusting something that isn’t a fact just because it appears on your phone or computer; how frightening must that be?

This messes with our minds making it difficult to tell what’s real from what’s not.

So this summit brought together some very important people from different countries like Britain, European Union (EU) and the United States (U.S).

They all had a discussion on how to stop this fake news madness. Some people even blamed Russia and China saying they do terrible things using their underhand propaganda schemes.

President Yoon talked about the need for nations to work together in fighting this problem. The President is correct with that statement – it’s teamwork that makes the dream work. He also mentioned something called “technological inequality.

Basically, some countries have amazing gadgets while others don’t. This is not right; it means that some people have more resources to spread fake news than others.

Now, I’m all for democracy, you know, where we get to choose our leaders and have a say in how things are run.

But fake news does spoil it all. It clouds our judgment because we are being fed falsehoods. That is why stopping it as early as possible is crucial.

The summit isn’t just about griping though they are trying to come up with solutions actually. One of the ideas is for countries to share experiences and learn from them. When we do that, then each one of us will be able to use technology more effectively and positively rather than negatively.

I was really impressed by what Cho Tae-yeol, the South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs had to say about unity, freedom and human rights. It is as though he is saying “hey we are members of a family”. I think it’s pretty neat.

There were also other important individuals present at the summit including Oliver Dowden who was serving as a Deputy Prime Minister and Blinken.

They both discussed how technology can be leveraged for democracy enhancement as well as destruction. This is like a two-edged sword isn’t it? The way we use it should be cautious.

Then again, there is Vera Jourova who is Vice-President of the European Commission (EC). She raised an interesting issue concerning election seasons when fake news becomes rampant.

At these times, we have to be keener in order not to fall for such manipulations.

Well, how about that? They are also keeping up with the trend by having more meetings with other countries such as Costa Rica, United States and Ghana. And they are going to keep talking about fighting fake news or actually using technology for good. That’s super cool.

In the final analysis, I am encouraged by this summit. It tells us that people from all over the world recognize democracy as something worth defending.

Does it not make sense to you? So let’s keep making noise and standing tall against false information together. We can do it.
