What I Love (and Don’t Love) About Being Nigerian

Being Nigerian is both a blessing and a rollercoaster. A a Nigerian there is a whole list of things that would make me proud of being from here but there are some things that just don't click.

We have good music. Both traditional and modern. I'm not yoruba but I loved listening to Fela and Lagbaja [correct my spelling if I'm wrong] but this was all influenced by my dad since I spent a lot of time around him as a kid so I picked up his interests as well.

We have beautiful cultures. Some might say we have a lot of tribes but to me that's what makes it beautiful the diverse culture the colors and ouuuu don't get me started on the fooood, the food is amazing and I have been opportune to see traditions from some of tge tribes especially in the wedding ceremonies and they are just beautiful.

One thing Nigerians are known for is our sense of humour. We are funny and sarcastic and we just bring the vibe to the party. There's no boring occasion if a Nigerian is there. We must laugh and be merry

And lastly we actually support our own. This is very heartwarming for those that travel out. Seeing a Nigerian community and getting to feel home away from home is one of the best things one can ever find.

Nigeria is an amazing place but like any other country there are ups and downs. The power issues are up there and most times completing a work task just seems like it's not going to happen anytime soon. As the days go by the prices of things goes up and this is a problem for everyone since these skyrocketing prices affect every industry. In nigeria there are certain unspoken social expectations and in most environment there's a subtle pressure to accomplish them so you won't be seen in a certain light.

Buy then eat would Nigeria be if we don't get to hear the excitement when the kids scream “up NEPA!!” anytime the power comes. Despite everything Nigeria is a beautiful country for me and I'm happy I was born here.

What do you love — and struggle with — about being Nigerian? I'd love to hear it.

In Nigeria, prices of things go up but don't come down even when the factors that affect the price have changed. In this area we ought to do better for the good of our beloved country.
