Tiny Flowers, Big Smiles: The Story Behind Our Matching Keychains
Sometime ago, my sisters and I got matching keychains at the mall, a tiny doughnut with skittles all over it. It was so fun and silly and totally us. That little charm stayed clipped to my keys for the longest time, not just because it was cute, but because it reminded me of the bond we share. Lately, I’ve been in my keychain era, making small crochet pieces here and there for client orders and as gifts, and I thought, why not bring that energy back home?
So, I decided to make a new keychain set for the three of us. Something cute, something connected. Similar, but with tiny differences, like us. Instinctively, I picked this tiny crochet flower I’ve been experimenting with for client freebies. It’s sweet, simple, and feels like it carries joy in every stitch. It just felt right.
These designs don’t actually take a lot of time to make, that’s probably one of the reasons I’ve gotten so into them. They’re quick to whip up, but still thoughtful and full of personality. The only thing that had me thinking twice was the yarn choice. I wanted the keychains to match without being too matchy. Each had to hold its own identity but still be part of a trio.
So here’s what I came up with:
The one with more petals goes to my eldest sister, fuller, steady, like the anchor of the trio.
The one with the same color but fewer petals is for my other sister, still connected, but softer in detail.
And mine? A blend of different colors from the other two, the little mix of both worlds, because that’s where I often find myself.
It’s a small gesture, but to me, this tiny flower trio feels like a quiet way of saying “we belong together.” The colors, though placed differently, are shared across all three. Like threads of connection woven into our everyday lives.
This also ties into something I’ve been working on for a while now, how to incorporate meaningful freebies into my crochet orders. A lot of vendors add candy or boxed drinks, and while those are cute and fun, I wanted something that lingers a little longer. Edibles are nice, but they’re gone in minutes. I want something that lasts, something that says, “You’re appreciated,” and continues to spark joy even after the order is unboxed.
A flower keychain feels like a good fit for that. It’s functional, beautiful, and can easily become part of someone’s daily life, clipped on a bag, keys, or even a zipper. And it makes me happy to know that each little item I send out into the world might carry a small smile with it.
Making these for my sisters was extra special. Sometimes, the tiniest projects bring the biggest joy, and honestly, I can’t wait to see their reactions when I hand them theirs.
Supplies used for this project:
