Iris || Crochet Princess Dress
Let's talk about the biggest project I have ever made. Fashion week was fast approaching and I knew I had to whip up something because I wasn't about to miss my one excuse for making something insanely breathtaking.
From ripping multiple pages off my book because I was trying to come up with a design that felt good to me.
To finally get the body of the dress and proceed to rip more papers because the design for the sleeve did not just feel okay and when I finally got the full body sketched I got to work.
I wanted something different, something that was going to scream princess and there it was “pink” . Well to be honest my man picked out the colors for this dress.
If there's a problem I have, it's being indecisive when it comes down to picking a color palette for an outfit I'm making for myself.
I don't own anything pink so this was me testing the waters. I finished one bra cup and the color just clicked in my head. I did the second and then I joined both cups up and finished the top park.
I wanted the dress to give a corset type of look so I picked a design that'll make the stitches on some parts pop out a little to give the straight outline that bones on a corset would.
My ultimate enemy in this whole fit was making the skirt part. I'm not over-exaggerating when I say each row took me an hour plus a few minutes to make and I had a lot of rows to go.
But it was my cross to carry.
After all, I wanted massive flares and I had to pay the price to get the prize of you know what I mean.
Before I knew it I was 12 yarn balls in and the length was like that of a belt.
I asked myself “do we really have to go on” “we can always change the design you know “ trust me I was regretting my choices but I'm not a quitter so I braced up and got back into it.
I worked on this for a minimum of five hours daily for weeks on end and at some point I thought I was not going to finish up because at the rate I was going it didn't look like I was making any progress and I only had days to finish up and get ready for the event and I locked in.
I finished my skirt in weeks and I went straight to making the bow behind.
The initial idea was to make one big bow but since it was for me and I have the freedom to alter and re alter I changed it.
I went with one small one big and I bit them together. I went with mesh so it'll give the look I wanted it to have and then did some detailing on the side so that they won't just be plain.
And my favourite on the bow was making the long straps. While making this I got in a little argument with another designer I've honestly forgotten who.
Since I didn't make the straps the same length the person was like that bow straps are always the same length.
Which was very strange for me because I've never imagined or designed a now that was I always leave one side longer I dunno why and for some reason it just looks right that way.
Anyways almost 30 yarn balls after and I got to make my very own princess dress. I present to you all “Iris”
