The Silent Struggle of the Youth

Ahmed is a good friend of mine. Some time ago, he shared an incident from when he visited Lahore for some work. In a middle-class neighborhood, he encountered a young man. Dressed in clean clothes, holding a plastic CV file, and with a strange restlessness in his eyes, he stood outside an office for an interview. When Ahmed extended a hand for a brief chat, the young man’s fingers were trembling.

"What is the matter, son? Are you alright?"

He replied with a smile, "Yes sir! I have been looking for a suitable job for a long time, and today is my first interview."

Ahmed asked, "Young man, when did you graduate from university?"
"Sir, three years ago!" he replied shyly.

"Three years?" Ahmed looked at the youth in astonishment.

"Yes sir! At first, I couldn't find a job anywhere without experience. Then, the work I did find was not in my educational field. Time passed like this, and now this job has come up according to my degree. I am trying my hardest to get this work, which is probably why I am nervous," he said softly with a smile and moved forward.

The young man went on his way, but he left Ahmed in a sea of wonder. Ahmed thought about how the boy was a university graduate with an engineering degree. He had dreams in his eyes, but his hands were empty. What a tragedy it is that our youth obtain degrees, yet employment opportunities slip through their hands like sand.

Unemployment as a Social Poison

Respected readers, my friend Ahmed’s point is 100 percent correct because this is not just a single incident; rather, it has become the greatest tragedy of our society. I believe that unemployment is not just the name for not finding a job. It is a poison that is slowly seeping into the veins of the entire society. This poison first creates poverty. Then, poverty pushes one into the swamp of despair, and despair paralyzes a person's creative abilities.

After that, the embodiment of knowledge becomes a useless being, fit for nothing, and gradually society begins to consider them a burden. Have you ever considered how a middle-class youth obtains a degree? The truth is that in exchange for that degree, he spends all the savings of his father or his home on that education and other necessities. Even then, if such a person has to wander from door to door for employment, imagine what he must go through. The self-respect of such individuals is wounded first, then their courage breaks, and a time comes when they begin to feel useless.

I wonder what kind of society this is that exploits its own educated individuals? It cannot provide work to its skilled people. It seems as if our rulers think that unemployment is just a game of statistics. No, friends! This is a game of emotions that are breaking, of dreams that are being washed away, and of families whose hopes are turning to dust.

Another incident comes to mind when I met an old friend from Rawalpindi. His son had gone to Gulf countries in search of work. The friend said, "Brother, this has now become a tradition here. First, educate the children, then take loans to send them abroad, then some peace is seen and the difficulties of life seem to lessen a bit."

I asked, "Does your son’s absence not worry you?"

His eyes welled up. He said, "It worries me and it hurts a lot, but helplessness outweighs both. There is no livelihood for him here. If, along with the pain and worry, there is an opportunity to build a career and halaal livelihood is available in abundance, then it is not a losing bargain."

A Path Toward National Reform

Respected readers, this logic may be strong, and you may call it an observational, practical, and experimental decision, but place your hand on your heart and tell me, is this entire situation not a living proof of our collective failure? We educate our talented youth and then hand them over to other countries for employment. I would call this the greatest example of "national suicide."

Remember, unemployment is not just an economic issue. It is a serial process that hollows out a society from within. From unemployment comes poverty, from poverty comes despair, from despair comes hopelessness, and from hopelessness comes the death of creative abilities. It is with great regret that I must say all these stages are swallowing our youth.

Do you know that a desperate person can never do creative work? He can neither start a new business, nor invent anything, nor do positive work for society. Despair pushes a person into darkness where no way out is visible. Then we ask why our economy is not progressing? Why are there no inventions here? Why are we lagging in social development? Listen well, there is only one answer to all these questions, and that is that we are not utilizing our human capital. We are not benefiting from the talents of our youth.

So what is the solution? Some people say that the government should provide jobs. Fine, the government should take responsibility, but think, is merely increasing government jobs enough? Not at all! We need a system where every hand finds work and every mind is provided with opportunities. We must promote internships, support small and medium businesses, and make technical education common.

Respected readers, imagine if, while living in this same homeland and with these same resources, just this much change occurred that every youth of ours received a business or a job according to their abilities. What a great revolution it would bring. How much our economy would progress. How prosperous our families would become. How much our social evils would decrease.

And know well that this is no pipe dream. These collective dreams of ours can come true if we all strive together. The government should make policies that create employment, business people should give opportunities to the youth, and we should create skills in our children.

Today, as this writing is completed, I am reminded of that incident of brother Ahmed mentioned at the beginning. I wish he and millions of youth like him could find work according to their abilities. I wish our country could embark on the path of progress. Respected readers, I dedicate today’s article to these builders of the nation and these youths. Along with this, I offer many prayers and good wishes for them.

نوجوان نسل کی خاموش جدوجہد

احمد میرا اچھا دوست ہے۔ کچھ عرصہ پہلے اس نے اپنا ایک واقعہ سنایا کہ میں کسی کام سے لاہور گیا ہوا تھا۔ وہاں ایک متوسط علاقے میں ایک نوجوان سے میرا سامنا ہوا۔ صاف ستھرے کپڑے پہنے، ہاتھ میں سی وی کا پلاسٹک فائل اور آنکھوں میں ایک عجیب سی بے چینی، وہ کسی دفتر کے باہر انٹرویو کے لیے کھڑا تھا۔ میں نے معمولی سی بات چیت کے لیے ہاتھ بڑھایا تو اس کی انگلیاں کانپ رہی تھیں۔

"کیا بات ہے بیٹا۔۔؟ ٹھیک تو ہو۔۔؟"

اس نے مسکراتے ہوئے جواب دیا: "جی سر! بس کافی عرصے سے مناسب جاب کی تلاش میں تھا اور آج پہلا انٹرویو ہے۔"

میں نے پوچھا: "برخوردار! یونیورسٹی سے کب فارغ ہوئے؟"

"سر تین سال پہلے!" اس نے چھینپتے ہوئے جواب دیا۔
"تین سال۔۔؟" میں نے حیرت سے اس نوجوان کی طرف دیکھا۔

"جی سر! پہلے تجربے کے بغیر کہیں جاب نہیں مل رہی تھی، پھر جو کام ملا وہ میری تعلیمی فیلڈ کا نہیں تھا، اسی طرح وقت گزر گیا اور اب یہ میری ڈگری کے مطابق جاب آئی ہے اور میری انتہائی کوشش ہے کہ یہ کام مجھے مل جائے، شاید گھبراہٹ کی یہی وجہ ہو۔" اس نے ذرا دھیمے سے لہجے میں مسکراتے ہوئے کہا اور آگے بڑھ گیا۔

وہ نوجوان خود تو چلتا بنا مگر مجھے حیرتوں کے سمندر میں چھوڑ گیا۔ میں سوچ رہا تھا کہ وہ یونیورسٹی کا گریجویٹ تھا، انجینئرنگ کی ڈگری لے چکا تھا، اس کی آنکھوں میں خواب تھے لیکن ہاتھ خالی تھے۔ یہ کیسا المیہ ہے کہ ہمارے نوجوان ڈگریاں تو حاصل کر لیتے ہیں مگر روزگار کے مواقع ان کے ہاتھ سے ریت کی طرح پھسل جاتے ہیں۔

بے روزگاری ایک معاشرتی زہر

قارئین کرام! میرے دوست احمد کی بات 100 فیصد درست ہے کیونکہ یہ کوئی ایک واقعہ نہیں بلکہ یہ کہیے کہ یہ ہمارے معاشرے کا سب سے بڑا المیہ بن چکا ہے۔ میں یہ سمجھتا ہوں کہ بے روزگاری صرف نوکری نہ ملنے کا نام نہیں یہ تو ایک زہر ہے، جو آہستہ آہستہ پورے معاشرے کی رگوں میں اتر رہا ہے۔ یہ زہر پہلے غربت پیدا کرتا ہے۔ پھر غربت، مایوسی کی دلدل میں دھکیلتی ہے اور مایوسی انسان کی تخلیقی صلاحیتوں کو مفلوج کر دیتی ہے۔

اس کے بعد علم کا وہ پیکر جوان ایک ناکارہ وجود بن جاتا ہے، جو کسی کام کا نہیں رہتا اور رفتہ رفتہ معاشرہ اسے ایک بوجھ سمجھنے لگتا ہے۔ کیا آپ نے کبھی غور کیا کہ ایک متوسط طبقے کا نوجوان ڈگری کیسے حاصل کرتا ہے۔۔؟ سچ تو یہ ہے کہ اس ڈگری کے بدلے وہ اپنے والد یا گھر کی ساری جمع پونچی، اس تعلیم اور اس کی دیگر ضروریات پر لگا دیتا ہے۔ پھر بھی اگر ایسا شخص روزگار کے لیے در بدر ٹھوکریں کھائے تو سوچیے اس پر کیا گزرتی ہوگی۔۔؟ ایسے افراد کی پہلے عزت نفس مجروح ہوتی ہے، پھر ہمت ٹوٹتی ہے اور ایک وقت آتا ہے کہ وہ خود کو بیکار محسوس کرنے لگتا ہے۔

میں سوچتا ہوں کہ یہ کیسا معاشرہ ہے جو اپنے ہی تعلیم یافتہ افراد کا استحصال کر رہا ہے۔۔؟ اپنے ہنر مندوں کو کام نہیں دے پا رہا۔۔؟ یوں لگتا ہے گویا ہمارے حکمران سمجھتے ہیں کہ بے روزگاری صرف اعداد و شمار کا کھیل ہے۔ نہیں بھئی! یہ تو ان جذبوں کا کھیل ہے جو ٹوٹ رہے ہیں، ان خوابوں کا جن پر پانی پھر رہا ہے، ان خاندانوں کا جن کی امیدیں خاک میں مل رہی ہیں۔

ایک اور واقعہ یاد آ رہا ہے کہ راولپنڈی کے ایک پرانے دوست سے ملاقات ہوئی۔ ان کا بیٹے کام کی تلاش میں خلیجی ممالک جا چکا تھا۔ دوست نے کہا: "بھئی ہمارے ہاں تو اب یہ رواج بن گیا ہے۔ پہلے بچوں کو پڑھاؤ، پھر قرض لے کر انہیں بیرون ملک بھیجو، پھر کچھ سکھ دیکھنے کو ملتا ہے اور زندگی کی جو مشکلات ہیں، کچھ کم ہوتی نظر آتی ہیں۔"

میں نے پوچھا: "تمہیں اپنے بیٹے کی غیر موجودگی پریشان نہیں کرتی۔۔؟"

ان کی آنکھیں نم ہو گئیں۔ بولے: "پریشان بھی کرتی ہے اور دکھ بھی بہت ہوتا ہے پر ان دونوں پر مجبوری بھاری ہے کہ یہاں تو اس کے لیے روزی روٹی ہی نہیں تو اگر دکھ اور پریشانی کے ساتھ کیریئر بنانے کا موقع بھی مل رہا ہو اور حلال روزی وافر مقدار میں بھی مل جائے تو گھاٹے کا سودا نہیں۔"

قومی اصلاح کی جانب ایک راستہ

قارئین کرام! اس منطق میں لاکھ مضبوطی صحیح، آپ اسے مشاہداتی، عملی اور تجرباتی فیصلہ بھی کہہ سکتے ہیں مگر دل پر ہاتھ رکھ کر بتائیے کہ کیا یہ پوری صورتحال ہماری اجتماعی ناکامی کا منہ بولتا ثبوت نہیں۔۔؟ ہم اپنے ہونہار نوجوانوں کو تعلیم دیتے ہیں اور پھر انہیں روزگار کے لیے دوسرے ممالک کے حوالے کر دیتے ہیں۔ میں تو یہی کہوں گا کہ یہ "قومی خودکشی" کی سب سے بڑی مثال ہے۔

یاد رکھیے بے روزگاری صرف معاشی مسئلہ نہیں یہ ایک سلسلہ وار عمل ہے جو معاشرے کو اندر سے کھوکھلا کر دیتا ہے۔ بے روزگاری سے غربت، غربت سے مایوسی، مایوسی سے نا امیدی اور ناامیدی سے تخلیقی صلاحیتوں کی موت ہو جاتی ہے۔ اور انتہائی افسوس سے کہنا پڑ رہا ہے کہ یہ تمام مراحل ہمارے نوجوانوں کو نگل رہے ہیں۔

کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ مایوس انسان کبھی تخلیقی کام نہیں کر سکتا وہ نہ تو کوئی نیا کاروبار شروع کرسکتا ہے نہ کوئی ایجاد کر سکتا ہے، نہ معاشرے کے لیے مثبت کام کر سکتا ہے۔ مایوسی انسان کو اندھیرے میں دھکیل دیتی ہے جہاں سے نکلنے کے راستے نظر ہی نہیں آتے۔ پھر ہم سوال کرتے ہیں کہ ہماری معیشت کیوں ترقی نہیں کر رہی۔۔؟ ہمارے ہاں ایجادات کیوں نہیں ہو رہی۔۔؟ ہم سماجی ترقی میں کیوں پیچھے ہیں۔۔؟ تو اچھے سے سن لیجئے کہ ان سب سوالوں کا ایک ہی جواب ہے اور وہ یہ ہے کہ ہم اپنے انسانی سرمائے کو بروئے کار نہیں لا رہے۔ ہم اپنے نوجوانوں کی صلاحیتوں سے فائدہ نہیں اٹھا رہے۔

تو حل کیا ہے۔۔؟ کچھ لوگ کہتے ہیں کہ سرکار کو چاہیے کہ نوکریاں فراہم کرے۔ ٹھیک ہے۔ حکومت کو بھی ذمہ داری لینی چاہیے، لیکن سوچیے کہ کیا محض سرکاری نوکریاں بڑھا دینا کافی ہے۔۔؟ ہرگز نہیں! ہمیں تو ایک ایسا نظام درکار ہے، جہاں ہر ہاتھ کو کام ملے۔ ہر دماغ کو مواقع میسر آئیں۔ ہمیں انٹرنشپ کو فروغ دینا ہوگا۔ چھوٹے اور درمیانے کاروباروں کو سپورٹ کرنا ہوگا۔ ٹیکنیکل ایجوکیشن کو عام کرنا ہوگا۔

قارئین کرام! سوچیے اسی وطن میں رہتے ہوئے، انہی وسائل و اسباب کے ساتھ فقط اتنی سی تبدیلی آجائے کہ ہمارے ہر نوجوان کو اس کی صلاحیتوں کے مطابق کاروبار یا ملازمت مل جائے تو کتنا بڑا انقلاب آجائے گا۔۔ ہماری معیشت میں کتنی ترقی آئے گی۔۔۔ ہمارے خاندان کتنے خوشحال ہو جائیں گے۔۔۔ ہماری معاشرتی برائیاں کتنی کم ہو جائیں گی۔۔۔ اور خوب جان لیں کہ یہ خیالی پلاؤ نہیں۔ ہمارے یہ اجتماعی خواب شرمندہ تعبیر ہو سکتے ہیں، اگر ہم سب مل کر کوشش کریں۔ حکومت کو چاہیے کہ وہ روزگار پیدا کرنے والی پالیسیاں بنائے۔ کاروباری حضرات کو چاہیے کہ وہ نوجوانوں کو موقع دیں اور ہمیں چاہیے کہ ہم اپنے بچوں میں ہنر پیدا کریں۔

آج یہ تحریر مکمل ہونے کے ساتھ ہی مجھے بھائی احمد کا وہ واقعہ یاد آرہا ہے جس کا میں نے آغاز میں ذکر کیا۔ کاش وہ اور اس جیسے لاکھوں نوجوان اپنی صلاحیتوں کے مطابق کام پا سکیں۔ کاش ہمارا ملک ترقی کی راہ پر گامزن ہو سکے۔ محترم قارئین! آج کا یہ مضمون انہی معماران ملک و ملت اور انہی نوجوانوں کے نام کرتے ہیں۔ ساتھ ہی ان کے لیے ڈھیروں دعائیں بھی کرتے ہیں اور نیک تمنائیں بھی رکھتے ہیں۔
