A few days ago, there was a powerful earthquake in Taiwan, measuring 7.2 in local on the Richter scale. It struck at 7:58 in the morning, and initially, I thought it was just another typical tremor. Taiwan sits right where two tectonic plates meet: the Eurasian Plate and the smaller Philippine Sea Plate. Taiwan itself is a result of this tectonic activity, and earthquakes are quite common here. Usually, the shaking lasts just a few seconds, and then life goes back to normal. But this time was different.

The shaking was intense, items in my house were tossed around, and it lasted for about a minute. It was unsettling. Thankfully, I'm okay, but I knew there would likely be serious damage elsewhere.

As I was preparing to clean up the mess, a second wave hit. It was just as strong, and there was no escaping it. I huddled in a corner, grateful it wasn't as intense as the first one. I tried turning on the TV to check for news about the damage, only to find it had fallen and its screen shattered. This earthquake was really something.

Subsequent aftershocks followed, and the Taipei Metro stopped running for a while. The situation seemed grim, reminiscent of the devastating 921 earthquake years ago, which claimed thousands of lives. The news finally clarified that the epicenter was in the eastern sea near Hualien, and the situation there was dire. Rescue teams were dispatched, and reports of damage started pouring in. Buildings were cracked, and some had structural damage. Even the restaurant downstairs from my place closed temporarily for safety checks or repairs. It's unbelievable!

Fortunately, my household only suffered the loss of a TV. But when I went to buy a new one, several models were sold out, indicating many others had experienced similar damage. With the entire city shaking, especially in high-rise buildings, the extent of financial losses could be significant.

This earthquake happened during the Qingming Festival holiday, when many people visit their ancestors' graves. Some friends were stuck on their way to Hualien, unable to take the Su-Hua Highway. Others canceled or changed their travel plans to the eastern region. And the aftershocks continue, shaking for seconds while watching videos or typing this article. Last night, I was jolted awake by another tremor, contemplating whether to evacuate. It's exhausting.
