What Forgetfulness cost me

It was on a faithful Saturday afternoon. Gladly, power had just been brought back on which lasted for an hour plus and gave us the impression that it was going to last longer after some series of flashes, so I decided to sort out the clothes I was going to iron against the Sunday service the following day.

While pressing the materials in my bedroom, behold, the light went out again. I still remained at the spot where I was ironing my clothes, hoping that not too long after because I didn't want the situation whereby after living the room they'll suddenly bring back the light, which means I'll have to return back to the room. I wanted to avoid an unnecessary journey.

I waited and waited, while surfing through social media with my phone to keep me busy and pass time. The room began to get hot due to the ceiling fan that had stopped spinning after the power outage. It stated getting discomforting for me. Disappointed and a bit annoyed, I left the room for the living room which had more ventilation and also where my siblings were.

Unknown to me, I had forgotten to unplug the iron or at least switch off the socket that it was connected to, (what a silly mistake of me). After about 45 minutes later or thereabout, the light had come back on. My brothers who don't let a second slide by whenever light came to turn the TV didn't hesitate this time as well. I knew the devil was behind the disaster that was about to happen when it happened to be Vampire Diaries that they had slotted in the video player.

I didn't take long and my eyes were already glued to the TV. All my attention was on nothing else at the moment but the movie I was currently watching. This time around, the light seemed to have lasted longer than it did the last time. Mom was at her shop while Dad was at work, so it was just my siblings and I, and all of us where in the sitting room, looking at the TV as Vampire Diaries played.

As God would have it, my younger brother felt the need to ease himself. So he got up and was reading for the restroom in my parents room. Few seconds after he had left the sitting room, the next thing we heard was "Fire!" We all rushed inside, and it happened that the fire was coming from my bedroom where I was ironing earlier. The whole place was filled with smoke. I was so terrified.

While staring at the room blazing with fire, my brothers had rushed to get some buckets of water, trying to put out the fire. While they were wondering what could have caused the fire, I suddenly remembered that I had left the pressing iron connected to light before I left for the sitting room. I quickly told my older brother and he rushed to remove the fuse because the room was filled with too much smoke to go in and turn the socket off.

After the smoke had subsided a bit, I realized that I had not just left the pressing iron on, I also left the bottom of the pressing iron on the last material I was ironing which happened to be on a wooden table. I guess we all know what caused the fireworks. Half of the materials in the room, mine and my sister's were now ashes. Most of the hangers as well that we used to hang out clothes had melted. And all these because I forgot to do one simple task, and that is turn off the socket.

Of course Mom and that were a little bit furious with me for making such costly mistake. But they were more glad that no one had gotten hurt. If just couldn't help but wonder what could have been the case if my younger brother hadn't gone in at that time to ease himself. But gladly that wasn't the case. That incident made me know the potential damage the heat of an electric iron could cause. Since that time upward, I never joke with electric iron whenever I'm making use of it although it took me sometime before I trusted myself to start using the pressing iron again.

Thank you for your wonderful time!

Wow, this must have been such a terrifying experience! I can imagine the shock and panic when you saw the fire. It’s crazy how one small mistake, like forgetting to unplug the iron, can lead to something so serious. Thank God no one got hurt your brother’s timing was truly a lifesaver! This is a big lesson for all of us to always double-check electrical appliances. I’m sure after this, you’ll never take that risk again. Thanks for sharing your story it was both engaging and eye-opening. Stay safe, and keep sharing your experiences!
