STREET ART #176 – The district of Newtown in Johannesburg, South Africa
Johannesburg has a great street art scene. I think what I managed to see, was only a small amount. One of the days I spend in the city, was in the downtown neighbourhood called Newtown. It's located in the inner city, but on the western side. What we did that day, was a tour with the hop-on -hop-off sightseeing bus. The bus has a stop in Newtown, so all these pieces of art was found by walking around here. I did try to find out about the artists and did find out that the murals are painted by both international and local artists.
The Newtown Revitalisation Project was going on during winter in the year 2021. it was focused on keeping the streets clean.
Two murals of Miram Makeba, but painted by two different artists. The portrait above, was painted by artist Thandazani Ndlovu. Miriam Makeba (1932-2008) was a South African singer, songwriter and human rights campaigner. She was also known as «Mama Africa». She helped make African music popular internationally
The portrait above is painted by artist Pro Thusi. The woman portrait is Albertina Sisulu (1918-2011). She was a South African anti-apartheid activist.
This was taken from the window of the bus as we continued our journey.
All of these murals certainly does help improve the look of this neighborhood. Even though it has been renovated and improved, it still looks a bit worn to me... It's not a place I would walk alone at night either.

Started out as a brick making region, generally throughout history a poor area. Not safe at all, nice you were able to visit through daytime to see what attempts are being made to clean up.
History of Newtown my mother grew up close by in Mayfair next to Fordsburg so I new the area well as a young girl.

I am very happy with my visit. Also I did feel quite safe. At least it was daytime and lots of people in the streets. Å great job in order to clean up, has certainly been done. It was really nice to be back. Last time I was Johannesburg was in 2017.Thanks for link. Will check it out 🙂
I have not been in this area in about forty years, I realize a lot of change is happening from family up there.
Wow! That's a long time. But good to know it's changing, for the better, most likely 🙂
As long as you felt safe and enjoyed the experience that is what counts most.
🙂I am sure I will be back some day. South Africa is an amazing place to spend time🙂
Large country to explore, great variety depending on what you prefer, you always welcome here!
I lived in Newtown from 2000 - 2005, and it was undergoing a lot of gentrification/improvement at that time (rents suddenly became high) but it seems to have gone backwards since then, which makes me sad. To me, it was always safe, even at night. The local community is mostly Muslim and I liked living close to the mosque because I enjoy the muezzin singing. Now I live on the Eastern side of the city, also close to the mosque
This was my second visit to Johannesburg. Both times we were warned to walk alone in the city centre. Whether things have changed to the better or worse, I could not tell, but we felt safe during the day. Local people who we asked for direction was helpful. I will be visiring South Africa again🙂
I'm glad you want to return! The city centre is dangerous but if you know where you are going or live there, it's ok. Sadly, things are much worse in the last few years due to growing poverty and desperation
Unfortuntatly things change, even it's sometimes for the better. Poverty is a challenge so may places.
