Cementerio de la Chacarita in Buenos Aires, Argentina

When in Buenos Aires there are lots of places one wants to visit. Among all the must-see tourist attraction you will find the Recoleta Cemetery. This is an amazing place where you will see impressive mausoleums and statues. This cemetery houses the rich and famous. Several Argentine presidents, influential politicians, military personal and Evita / Eva Perón (the former first lady of Argentina from 1945 -1952) are burried here. On my second visit to Buenos Aires I went to another cemetery – Cementerio de la Chacarita. This is the largest cemetery in Buenos Aires and also the last resting place to people of influence. But it has more of a bohemian character. People like Carlos Gardel, known for tango, actors, composers, poets athletes and musicians are resting here. It is free to visit.

The Chacarita is just as impressive as Recoleta. When I was in Buenos Aires for the first time, Recoleta was on my list of places to visit. Chacarita was not actually on my list on my second visit. But on the day of arrival we had to wait for check-in at our hotel until late afternoon. Since it was located only a few kilometers from Chacarita, we chose to go there and spend some time.

The Chacarita Cemetery is a place that has a special beauty in terms of architecture and the design of the "streets" and mausoleums. It is well worth getting to know a little about who some of the people are. We were not very well prepared because it was not a planned visit. Afterwards, we found out the names of several of the most famous personalities who have found their final resting place here at the Chacarita Cemetery.

Afterwards, we also found out a little more about the cemeteries. In the 1870s an emergency cemetery was established here. At that time there was a yellow fever epidemic. The Recoleta cemetery would not accept victims of the epidemic. Therefore, a temporary cemetery had to be created. I'm not sure excactly where or which part of Chacarita, but it was in any case closed down eventually. The Cementerio de la Chacarita was founded in 1887. It was well worth the visit.
