Hello friends, it is a pleasure to be back with you, today I bring you a horror film.
The Pope's Exorcist 2023, based on the main plot of his real memoirs, can be found on Netflix. Spoiler alert.

The story begins in 1987 with Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's chief exorcist, a sarcastic guy and expert in demons who arrives at a Spanish abbey to help an American family Julia, her daughter Amy and son Henry who suffers a traumatic accident in the abbey's well, accidentally releasing an ancient evil sealed by the Vatican centuries ago. Henry becomes possessed by a powerful demon named Asmodeus, who writes "hate" on his skin, makes him levitate, and spits out a red bird - a symbol of Amorth's past traumas, such as his war in Italy where he saw his platoon die and failed to save a girl named Rosaria.

Amorth, with the help of the young Spanish priest Esquivel, investigates and discovers that the abbey was a portal where 200 fallen angel demons tried to infiltrate the Church to destroy it from within during the Inquisition, the Vatican sealed them, but restoration works reopened it. The demon uses Amorth's traumas – including a failed romance with a woman who asked him to leave the priesthood – to weaken him, and even temporarily possesses Amy. In a brutal climax, Amorth allows herself to be possessed in exchange for freeing the children, taking the demon to the well for a final exorcism with crosses, medals and prayers, sending him back to hell in an epic explosion, meanwhile revealing that the red bird was Rosaria's spirit.

In the end, Amorth and Esquivel go to the Vatican, where the Pope congratulates them, but a bishop reveals the conspiracy the demon wanted to possess Amorth to infiltrate the Church from his high position. They seal him up again, and the movie ends with Amorth ready for more cases, hinting at sequels.
My opinion is that it is an entertaining and fast-paced possession thriller, which shines thanks to Russell Crowe as Father Amorth, he nails it with his sarcastic charisma and touches of black humor, making the character the most memorable and what saves a predictable script full of genre clichés such as Vatican conspiracies. It's not pure or innovative horror, with effects that sometimes fail and a weak supporting cast, but it works if you're looking for something based on real events. For me I give it a 7 out of 10.

La historia arranca en 1987 con el padre Gabriele Amorth, el exorcista jefe del Vaticano, un tipo sarcástico y experto en demonios que llega a una abadía española para ayudar a una familia americana Julia, su hija Amy y el hijo Henry quien sufre un accidente traumático en el pozo de la abadía, liberando accidentalmente un mal antiguo sellado por el Vaticano siglos atrás. Henry se posee por un demonio poderoso llamado Asmodeo, que escribe "odio" en su piel, lo hace levitar y escupir un pájaro rojo un símbolo de traumas pasados de Amorth, como su guerra en Italia donde vio morir a su pelotón y falló en salvar a una chica llamada Rosaria.

Amorth, con ayuda del joven sacerdote español Esquivel, investiga y descubre que la abadía fue un portal donde 200 ángeles caídos demonios intentaron infiltrarse en la Iglesia para destruirla desde adentro durante la Inquisición, el Vaticano los selló, pero las obras de restauración lo reabrieron. El demonio usa los traumas de Amorth –incluyendo un romance fallido con una mujer que le pidió dejar el sacerdocio para debilitarlo, y hasta posee a Amy temporalmente.

En un clímax brutal, Amorth se deja poseer a cambio de que libere a los niños, llevando al demonio al pozo para un exorcismo final con cruces, medallas y oraciones, lo envían de vuelta al infierno en una explosión épica, mientras tanto revelan que el pájaro rojo era el espíritu de Rosaria.
Al final, Amorth y Esquivel van al Vaticano, donde el Papa los felicita, pero un obispo revela la conspiración el demonio quería poseer a Amorth para infiltrarse en la Iglesia desde su puesto alto. Lo sellan de nuevo, y la peli termina con Amorth listo para más casos, insinuando secuelas.

Mi opinión es que es un thriller de posesiones entretenido y con ritmo rápido, que brilla gracias a Russell Crowe como el padre Amorth, lo clava con su carisma sarcástico y toques de humor negro, haciendo que el personaje sea lo más memorable y lo que salva un guion predecible lleno de clichés del género como conspiraciones vaticanas. No es terror puro ni innovador, con efectos que a veces fallan y un elenco secundario flojo, pero funciona si buscas algo basado en hechos reales. Para mí le doy un 7 de10.
