The Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires, the main catholic temple of Argentina, is located in front of the Plaza de Mayo and is the seat of the archbishopric of Buenos Aires. Its history reflects the ups and downs of the city since colonial times.

The first attempt to erect a major temple dates back to 1593, when the construction of a main church was authorized. However, the successive initial buildings were precarious and suffered collapses and deterioration. At the beginning of the 18th century it was decided to build a new cathedral of greater proportions. In 1725 the foundation stone was laid and by 1750 it was already in use, although the work was not completely finished.

The present façade, inspired by French classicism and far from the typical colonial style, was finished only in 1827 under the direction of the architect Prospero Catelin. Its twelve Corinthian columns symbolize the apostles and the union of the tribes of Israel. The interior, on the other hand, preserves a style closer to baroque and neoclassical, with a Latin cross plan with five naves, side chapels and an imposing main altar.

The cathedral is not only a religious, but also a historical and political center. In its interior rest the remains of General José de San Martín, hero of the South American independence, guarded by the guard of the grenadier. It also houses a mausoleum dedicated to Cardinal Antonio Quarracino and relics of John Paul II.

For centuries it was the scene of national celebrations and ceremonies and as a cultural symbol of the city is of great importance and is a temple visited by tourists worldwide.
In its interior keeps pure history and beauty for its structure and in my visit to this temple I could notice a statue of the Virgin Mary with a Venezuelan flag on her right and it was a good surprise.

La Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, principal templo católico de la Argentina, se encuentra frente a la Plaza de Mayo y es la sede del arzobispado de Buenos Aires. Su historia refleja los vaivenes de la ciudad desde la época colonial.

El primer intento de levantar un templo mayor se remonta a 1593, cuando se autorizó la construcción de una iglesia matriz. Sin embargo, los sucesivos edificios iniciales fueron precarios y sufrieron derrumbes y deterioros. A comienzos del siglo XVIII se decidió edificar una nueva catedral de mayores proporciones. En 1725 se colocó la piedra fundamental y hacia 1750 ya estaba en uso, aunque la obra no estaba del todo concluida.

La fachada actual, inspirada en el clasicismo francés y ajena al típico estilo colonial, se terminó recién en 1827 bajo la dirección del arquitecto Próspero Catelin. Sus doce columnas corintias simbolizan a los apóstoles y la unión de las tribus de Israel. El interior, en cambio, conserva un estilo más cercano al barroco y neoclásico, con una planta de cruz latina de cinco naves, capillas laterales y un imponente altar mayor.

La catedral no solo es centro religioso, sino también histórico y político. En su interior descansan los restos del general José de San Martín, prócer de la independencia sudamericana, custodiados por la guardia granadera. Asimismo, alberga un mausoleo dedicado al cardenal Antonio Quarracino y reliquias de Juan Pablo II.

Durante siglos fue escenario de celebraciones patrias y ceremonias y como simbolo de cultural de la Ciudad es de gran importancia y es un templo muy visitado por turistas a nivel mundial.
En su interior guarda historia pura y belleza por su estructura y en mi visita a este templo pude notar que una estatua de la virgen maria con una bandera de Venezuela a su derecha y fue un buena sorpresa.
