Werewolves (2024).
I wasn’t planning on doing a review but I have watched two half-assed movies in a row and let’s just say I’m angry. Why kind of movies or should I say scripts are being produced these days? Although this one is last year.
I decided to watch this movie because I found the synopsis (I avoid trailers now because they take away the fun of discovery) quite interesting. I thought no matter how bad it got, it can’t be worse than Superdeep. I was more or less wrong. Let’s establish the links shall we?
Werewolves is an American horror movie about the outbreak of a global pandemic were a fullmoon (referred to as Supermoon) alters the DNA of humans and turns them into werewolves. A year had passed since then and a couple of scientists came together to create a cure. Now, the Supermoon is back and Wesley Marshall (Frank Grillo) finds himself not only bearing the burden of fixing the world, but also protecting his late brothers family. What follows that is… well, read on.
So many things were wrong with this movie. While in the beginning they started off strong, as the plot progressed the flaws became so apparent it took away the originality of the story. I feel the movie could have gone so many other ways if more effort was put into the story. Let’s move on.
Let’s talk about the beginning. Like I said, it was good. The contrast and the sense of urgency. It all felt so real. The tiny sprinkles of drama and excitement following the rise of the moon. The atmosphere was crafted with diligence and I applaud it. However, during the progression of the scenes followed by the dialogues, I could already see what would happen during the rise of the moon. I wasn’t wrong.
Moving along, we have the hairy fellows. Maybe due to budget (I have no say here) the suits were so obvious. That’s just by the way because as I watched on, I noticed that these werewolves seemed to have intelligence. Okay, not bad. What I couldn’t understand is if they were fashioned in the ways of wolves and if so, it made no sense what happened in the end. Toss in the reckless behaviour of Dr. Amy Chen (Katrina Law) who wanted to test a theory.
First. They portray these wolves as mindless monsters and the next they have intelligence and forming packs. Then, we have Amy going off to yell out to a hairy fellow, this hairy fellow who has all of a sudden grown in intellect just lets her. Okay. There are certainly no flaws there. What was the theory she was trying to prove?
So many things were thrown off balance. Like Lucy Marshall (Ilfenesh Hadera) going crazy and putting her and her daughter’s life on the line. However, I recalled the talk of fear and bad decisions so, I just associated her actions with those words. Taking it at face value that the theme after all was fear and bad decisions. Maybe that’s why it made sense.
Then as the movie drew to a close, you can just tell that it was rushed. The death of Amy. She was already in the car. She had the door open, it just felt like she waited for the wolf to snap her up. Almost like there was a delay with timelines and the guy in the suit had been late. You know, behind the scenes? Well okay. Maybe I am overreacting and have way too high of expectations.
Follow that, we have Wesley Marshall who thought that becoming a wolf was the way to save his family. Jesus! That was the most embarrassing kind of emotional solicitation from the audience I have ever witnessed. What? The guy just thought I would become a wolf and fight these guys and then save my family? What is this, Disney?
One, there was no guarantee that he won’t join the pack. Two, yelling to Cody (Jimmy Cummings) that he didn’t like him won’t miraculously hold his sanity. Three, what the ever loving hell was that in the end with the one bullet and the daylight? I don’t want to spoil it any further so you would just have to watch it if you want to get it.
It was all so… cliche. I saw the end from the middle. I knew that would happen but I held a little bit of hope. I hoped that it would be different. Seems like 2024 was the year of trash movies.
It’s a 4/10 for me. Like I said, it was strong at the beginning. Everything was great. The atmosphere was on point but then they veered off and destroyed everything.
A lot of movies don't seem to care about the plot. They seem to think people will just watch :(
They just throw some story and money and think it's good. Yuck!
