The Power of Your Mind by Chris Oyakhilome
For this second half of the year, I promised myself to go on a mental (and emotional) revamp because I saw how much I needed it. Just incase you’re wondering, it means reading literary works that are (highly) spiritual and has to do with my current standing. Just so you know, my current standing isn’t very high.
Note: if you’re not one who believes in God, the mind or the Bible, this would be an incredibly hard one. I would suggest you just scroll on by as nothing from here on would make any sense.
This is another subtle warning that this book is one of the “religious” types but on so many levels, it has to do with one of the things we can’t do without: The Mind.
The Power of Your Mind written by Chris Oyakhilome is a must have in every Christian library. Not only does he (the author) explain the power your mind has to control your world but he also employs Christian (religious) context in the dissemination of this knowledge. Unlike Joseph Murphy who only focuses on the logical part of the subconscious, Chris Oyakhilome uses deep truths from God’s word to have you see what exactly (and to what extent) your mind can do.
I read this book first in secondary school (about the time I bought it) and then again when I was in my 200L in University. I had already read Joseph Murphy’s The Power of Your Subconscious Mind and reading this one was like adding more content to what I already knew. I know how powerful the mind is and how critical it is that it is understood because therein lies the true quality of life.
I am not one to bring such things to the blockchain but I promised myself that this second half of the year would be more of a “spiritual awakening” and we do it in many different ways.
Let’s look at some of the very notable things about this book shall we?
1.The Scrutiny of this entity called The Mind.
Chris Oyakhilome doesn’t just go into a spiritual realm of what the mind is and how “you need God” to access it. No, he breaks it down taking it slow so that even the slowest people can understand it. If they aren’t too judgmental, I believe anyone (even a non-religious person) can read this book.
It begins by breaking into parts the constructs of the mind. From the brain, to imagination (thoughts) and then to the bridge of consciousness which is the human spirit (or the soul). There is one thing written in that book that I will never forget and that is how the mind can’t be studied. The brain can, it has been. But the only studies that surround the mind are relentless theories. This is because the mind is spiritual. It can’t be seen.
I have seen enough to understand this and we have a lot of inventions in the world today to prove this. Things made out of absolutely NOthing.
2.The ability to harness the power that is Your Mind.
I remember telling someone that the reason they kept meeting the wrong people and kept getting into the wrong relationships and habits was because they view themselves a certain type of way. Their quality of life from inside translates to what they see outside, their environment.
Many people believe in the life Laws. One of them is the Law of Attraction. What you focus on is what you attract. Now Joseph Murphy throws light on this calling it the power of the subconscious mind. Chris Oyakhilome on the other hand reveals the truth through God’s word (the Bible) by pointing out the similarities between man and the God-head. The power of meditation.
You can only bring to life what you breathe upon (just like the Spirit did on the face of the waters) and that is why we have so many things today. Things that didn’t exist previously but was given life by the power of someone’s mind. They meditated long and hard enough to call these things forth into existence. He used scriptural examples but I won’t be going into that.
3.The power to cause Change.
One of my favourite things about this book is how much it delves into the nature of man and our likeness. If you think about it, we are gods! Because, show me what other living creature on earth has the ability to create like we do.
We are able to create because of this entity we have as a gift which is the mind. We close our eyes and see “imaginations” but these active thoughts take life and birth attitudes that leads to manifestation. It is a whole process on its own and like everything noteworthy, you can’t skip the process.
I can’t go in deep totally on how much of good this book did for me (on the three occasions I have read it). Yes, I am a Christian and yes, I read spiritual literature but there are just some aspects of things that need to be covered with more than spiritual knowledge.
This book is it. Especially for me who knows my mind has been warped by all the things I let in there and needs a serious vacuuming. You can only counter lies with one thing, and that is the truth. Hence, this book brought to my knowledge for this month as I took it one chapter at a time, the effect of using my mind right.
As I enter August, I begin with a new book. One page and chapter at a time but that’s a book for August. Cheers to a better half of 2025!

There’s something deeply resonant about realizing your mind’s been absorbing too much noise and deciding to do a full spiritual cleanse.... especially using something that speaks both to logic and faith. I read Murphy’s The Power of Your Subconscious Mind too
Yes ma’am! That’s exactly how I felt. Too much clutter. Just needed to filter.
